Item description for The Privilege of Being Catholic by Oscar Lukefahr...

Overview
Using Scripture, history, and revelation, Father Lukefahr highlights the tenets of faith that form the heart of Catholic tradition. More than a catechism or an overview of the history and dogma of Church teaching...it is instead a unique pastoral presentation that not only explores how the Catholic sacramental view of the world is expressed in every aspect of Catholic life but also helps readers to know and love the Catholic Church better as they grow to appreciate the privilege of being Catholic. Great for parish programs, adult education, and study groups.

Reviews - What do customers think about The Privilege of Being Catholic?

Amazing Book  Jul 19, 2007
This gentle, humble man has written a masterpiece of a book. He is so complete, straightforward and loving, covering deep theological truths with simplicity. He's not trying to impress us with his education, he's trying to teach EVERYONE what we need to know for fullness of life, and might not have ever learned. This should be the required RCIA text, as far as I am concerned, and read with increasing joy by all who seek the truth. You don't have to be in a class, he is a master teacher. You can learn more at [...], if you want. Amazing man, amazing book. Thank you, Father Luke, and God bless you.

The Privilege of Being Catholic  Mar 19, 2006
Father Oscar uses the Sacramental Principle to help us understand the Catholic teachings for those with no theology background. He does this in an easy to read overview on the history and dogma of Church teaching. The book starts with creation and how God gave us a wonderful world that could be paradise. But he also gave us free will, which we used to disobey God. And through our choice, we introduced sin into the world.

The book explains how Jesus intoduced the Sacraments to us and what they are. How God speaks to us through the Bible and is in contact with us via the sacraments. Church traditions are based on time-honored methods we have been using for years. And sacred traditions are based on the official teaching of the Church. Some truths of God have been available to us since we walked the earth. The book then covers Catholic Prayers, the Church's position on saints and guardian angels. And a short history of the Church.

OUTSTANDING  Sep 18, 2002
Simply the best book on explaining the Catholic Faith I have read. Absolutely everyone, whatever their beliefs may be, should read it.

The Privilege of Being Catholic  Dec 29, 1999
As an active Youth Minister for the Catholic Church I find Fr. Lukefahr's writing style easy to read and understand. I have used "The Priviledge of Being Catholic" extensively for preparing for R.C.I.A. classes and others that I teach. Also Oscar's book is easy to lend out to parents who have youth who ask tough questions that the parent's do not feel comfortable answering.

Oscar's use of the Sacramental Principle to explain alot of the Catholic teachings that Non-Catholics often attack, helps the non- theologian to practice good Apologetics. A workbook is also available that helps a teacher to use Ocsar's teachings in a classroom setting. I highly recommend "The Priviledge of Being Catholic" to any professional lay or religious minister in the Catholic Church and those who question the biblical basis of Catholic teaching and practices.
