Reviews - What do customers think about Life You've Always Wanted Leader's Guide?
Who tested this thing? Feb 3, 2007
We recently went through John Ortberg's "The Life You've Always Wanted" with our small group, utilizing both the book and the DVD series with participant's guide. Because we were using the participant's guides, my wife and I used the leader's guide each week to help us lead the group discussion time. I have two primary critiques of the leader's guide.
First and foremost, I was flabbergasted by the time that was suggested for each section of discussion. I have no idea if they actually use real people to test these products before they are published, but if so, they must have been completely tongue-tied. Each of the six weeks has a suggested length for discussion (including the DVD teaching) of about 55 minutes. We struggled each week to finish within two hours, and we skipped a number of the questions each week. I fully realize that time management is a struggle for any group leader, and curriculum cannot solve that dilemma. However, it would be helpful if the leader's guide had some remotely reasonable time estimates to guide our leadership.
My second critique is significantly more minor, but the size of this leader's guide is rather unwieldy. I don't know why it couldn't be formatted into a slightly more functional size.
After the first few weeks, we basically stopped using the leader's guide and just led the discussions from the participant's guides. For someone who is completely overwhelmed by the prospect of leading group discussion, this leader's guide might be a useful tool. But for more seasoned leaders, I'm not sure that it adds enough value to warrant the purchase price. I think a better preparation choice for a group leader would be to read the book along with the group study, to provide greater depth and background from Ortberg's solid teaching.

Excellent material and presentations. Very effectively invites all to enter into spiritual disciplines which will open for them the lfe they've always wanted. Only problem is that is too much material for the suggested hour format. If used in Sunday school, I'd stretch it to 12 sessions (2 per lesson) to give more time for discussion and the Bible study segments.
