Reviews - What do customers think about La Modista De La Reina/ the Queen's Fashion Designer?
A biography of the 'Mme Ministre de la mode' Dec 29, 2007
Unfortunately there is no english translation for this french book of recent aparition in France -it is from 2004. Normally everybody refers to Charles Frederick Worth as the very first 'fashion designer' but Rose Bertin, was in deed the very first person who has everything, to go much further than a simple millinery or seamstress.
Starting as a very humble modist, she get the influential help from noble patrons and opened a store called the 'Grand Mogol' in Paris. In that place she become the scissor of the day and the favorite of Marie Antoinnete. Quite opinionated she make her way to have a voice, opinion and taste in all the fashions of her time. Bad luck the 'people' would see all this extravagances as proof of the immorality of the regime and at the end would be a part in the profound hate people felt to the queen.
Hopefully it would be translated in English soon. If maybe it is not a literary jewel, is a very good book if you are interest in the period, in fashion history or fashion in general.
