Item description for Presidents' Crossing by Norm Wymbs...

Reference has been made in prior publications of the author, and in the Dixon Historic Center itself, to the "Mystique of Dixon". Like so many impressions based upon instinct or emotion, that description is difficult to pin down to a simple statement. The gut feeling about this small midwestern community was first evidenced during the years the author and his best half became close to candidate, and later, President Ronald Reagan. Some of that feeling took roots of its own during the efforts to restore his first boyhood home in the small midwestern river town. President Reagan never made any pretense, or apology for his strong feeling about Dixon, Illinois. As he had remarked on several occasions, even while in the opulence of the Washington White House, about his old, more modest homeland on the Rock River, "it was a good life, I could never ask for more, then or now!" During many quiet talks, never of the intruding question and answer variety, Ronald Reagan always took on a special tone, almost of reverence, while speaking of Dixon and his years living there. During those eight years in the White House as President of the United States, aides used to anxiously go out of their way to caution visitors, "don't get him started on Dixon, or we'll never hold to our schedule!" To those who never had the opportunity to get close to him, or see old Dixon as he saw it, his feelings were incomprehensible. His early life in two cities in Iowa, plus long years in Los Angeles and Hollywood, California, never held a candle to his Dixon years! Even in eight years in the general weirdness of Washington and many exotic world capitals could not shake that feeling! It is the mission of the Dixon Historic Center, along with this and other historic research, to try and put a face on this ephemeral mystique. As we'll find along the way, there are many other famous figures touched by this special wand, as well as many more unnoted individuals through the years whose lives were just as profoundly effected.
