Reviews - What do customers think about An Illustrated A to Z of Digital Photography (Digital Photogrpahy A-Z)?

Not useful for anyone.  Nov 2, 2006
Frankly, this book isn't very good. I've seen worse writing, and the photos (apparently stock images -- it's not clear) used as examples aren't horrible, but I just can't imagine a reader for whom this book would be useful.

The information presented is clearly below that of an advanced reader. An intermediate photographer looking for more information or tips will be disappointed to find that explanations are ridiculously oversimplified. The section on aperture simply says that F-stop numbers are based on "scientific measurements". And the description of how JPEG compression works is so oversimplified that it's completely wrong. (I get the impression that the authors don't realize this.)

Meanwhile, other sections assume that the reader is beyond the beginner stage. For example, whereever exposure is discussed, inevitably the authors suggest that certain situations require using EV compensation, without ever detailing how much might be useful when (or even in which direction!). Not only are technical details which may be helpful to intermediate photographers lacking, but explanations for beginners are missing too.

And, as alluded to above, it doesn't even really make that great a coffee-table book. The photos used for examples are servicable, but nondescript. They generally serve to illustrate the point at hand, but don't really grab the eye otherwise.

So, really, I'd skip this one.
