Nicki Verploegen cites her vocation as that of spirituality. Since her youth, she has loved having "God-talks" with people, exploring how they make meaning in their lives and connect with the sacred. With that in mind, she has travelled extensively throughout the world, studying, teaching, and giving retreats. Her special interest has been to provide retreats free of charge to humanitarian aid and pastoral workers outside the United States through the nonprofit she cofounded called, TATENDA International. Through this organization she and others provide care to caregivers, believing that as they thank these diligent workers, they rejuvenate them emotionally and spiritually, allowing them to continue their labors among the needy.
She has published four books with Wipf and Stock Publishers, including Meditations With Merton, Planning and Implementing Retreats: A Parish Handbook, Organic Spirituality: A Sixfold Path for Contemplative Living, and her most recent, Legacy of the Founders: From Monks to Missionaries.
In addition to her retreat work and writing, she gives individual spiritual direction and teaches in graduate programs around the United States. She serves on the faculty of the College of Mount Saint Joseph in Cincinnati. Her doctorate in Spirituality has allowed her to explore the spiritual journeys of people from many cultures, nationalities, and traditions.
