Item description for Glitter of Diamonds (Manziuk and Ryan Mystery Series #2) by N. J. Lindquist...

Overview
In Glitter of Diamonds, the second book in her Manziuk and Ryan series, N. J. Lindquist once again hooks us with deftly-drawn characters, complex story-lines, and thought-provoking issues, served up with her unique mix of tongue-in-cheek humor and gentle compassion. This time, she takes readers into the world of major league baseball and its surrounding media. She also asks subtle questions about the prices people are willing to pay to see their dreams come true. After Stasey Simon, an outspoken sports talk-show host, asks on-air for a volunteer to knock some sense into the home team?s temperamental new pitcher, Toronto Detective-Inspector Paul Manziuk and Detective-Constable Jacqueline Ryan have to hustle to catch a murderer swinging a lethal bat before the case escalates into an international incident. Manziuk is a 47-year-old life-long cop with Ukrainian ancestry, with a very patient wife, and three young adult children. Ryan is a 28-year-old black woman with an MA in criminology, Jamaican ancestry, and a serious attitude. Lindquist grew up reading Trixie Belden, Ginny Gordon, and Nancy Drew; switched to the works of Agatha Christie, Erle Stanley Gardiner, Georgette Heyer, Dorothy Sayers, and P. D. James; and eventually decided to try her hand at writing a contemporary mystery in the classic style. Reviews from Publishers Weekly, Library Journal, and other locations comparing her work to the best of Agatha Christie, assured her she had been successful. The Manziuk and Ryan series owes more, however, to Georgette Heyer, another British queen of mystery-writing. Lindquist has done what Heyer did in many of her mysteries: tell the story on two levels?giving both the characters' viewpoint and the detectives' viewpoint, and showing the effect violence can have on a group of people?both how they react initially, and how it impacts them. While keeping the characters and plot in the forefront, in Glitter of Diamonds, Lindquist also manages to explore the intricate, almost symbiotic relationships between the management, players, fans, and media that make Major League Baseball a vital part of the North American culture. As the crime threatens to escalate into an international incident, Manziuk draws on his own knowledge of baseball while his partner, Jacquie Ryan, tries to understand a game she?s never watched.

Reviews - What do customers think about Glitter of Diamonds (Manziuk and Ryan Mystery Series #2)?

Does it get any better than baseball and a mystery?  Jan 13, 2009
The second book in N.J. Lindquist's Ryan and Manziuk series grabs your attention from the first page and keeps you reading until way past when you needed to go to bed!

The world of professional baseball is well-depicted, as are the struggles the players and managers face in their world that's all too often about business and not the game. Their stories are deftly woven into a tightly written mystery that's a fabulous whodunnit!

N.J. Lindquist's style entertains and engages the reader, keeping them lost in her deftly written tale, beguiled by her all-too-real characters.

So, when will we see then next one? I look forward to it!

Baseball and murder  Aug 18, 2008
The Toronto Matrix have a new pitcher. Ricardo (Rico) Valasquez is from Cuba and has let fame and fortune go to his head. He isn't getting along with his teammates. Matter of fact, he taunts the relief pitcher he took the job away from. And though he has a wife in Cuba, he has a girlfriend, Eva, in Toronto. Since Rico doesn't speak much English, he pairs up with teammate Ferdinand Ortes who speaks Spanish.

The Toronto Matrix has a family friendly image. Rico's carrying on and throwing baseballs and yelling when he doesn't get his way, doesn't fit that image. So unbeknownst to him, they bring his wife Alita up from Cuba to surprise him. It surprises him and stymies his action.

Stasey Simon is a local sports radio talk show host. One day she recommends on air that someone bash Rico's head in. When Rico is found murdered in that way, she becomes a suspect. But considering he didn't get along with his teammates, there are quite a few suspects. That list also includes other sportscasters: especially Ginny Lovejoy and Kyle Schmidt.

Paul Maziuk and Jackie Ryan are the detectives on the case. Maziuk is a baseball fan. Ryan is not. They've recently been paired up since Maziuk's partner is in the hospital. Can they work together and find the identity of the killer?

I am not a baseball enthusiast, and it took me a while to fully get into the book. Even while reading the first few chapters, I found I couldn't just set it aside. I had to know what was going on. There are so many different undercurrents and tangled story lines. I found myself picking it back up to unravel the mystery.

It is a very well written book. It shows the lives of the players as well as the sportscasters. Plus I liked that it even gave us a real insight into the lives of the detectives. And it showed how those lives can be intertwined.

The author has done a great job of creating a large cast of characters. Yet I never felt confused as to who people were, and I really liked most of the characters. The baseball setting as very well done as well.

I highly recommend this book.

A Fun Mystery for Baseball and Mystery Fans  Aug 21, 2007

A controversial "bad boy" of baseball rocks a Canadian baseball team and leads to more than one person wanting him dead in this mystery from Canadian author N.J. Lindquist. Rico Velasquez was becoming known more for his locker-room battles than his skill on the pitcher mound, and the management's decision to bring in his wife from Cuba to calm him down backfires and only creates more chaos for the womanizing pitcher. So when an outspoken radio talk show host asks for someone to bat some sense into him, it's no big surprise that her wish gets granted.

Glitter of Diamonds is essentially two novels in one, the first half a behind-the-scenes glimpse into the world of Major League baseball and the media that covers it, the second half a police procedural focusing on the two detectives investigating the player's murder. Even though the novel is labeled "A Manziuk and Ryan Mystery," the murder and introduction of the two detectives doesn't occur until 120 pages into the story. This is unfortunate, as the personal and professional turmoil facing the pair of investigating detectives is both entertaining and fascinating. When his former partner is hospitalized, the middle-aged, white Paul Manziuk teams up with Jackie Ryan, a younger black woman who lives with her meddling female relatives and may herself be becoming too involved with a suspect.

While the baseball lore is fascinating, the pace of the story tends to slow down in the middle and could have benefited with some editing. The two detectives are the strongest characters of the novel, and perhaps it is the initial focus upon the up-and-coming sports reporter Ginny Lovejoy that causes the reader to drift. At times it is hard to tell the players without a scorecard, and this may be why a roster of the characters appears at the beginning of the novel. Overall though, Lindquist has created a novel that will please both fans of baseball and police procedurals with is wit and originality. There's much to enjoy in this novel as the author brings to light the exciting and often convoluted world of Canadian baseball.

Whodunit Plateful  Jun 6, 2007
A plate full of intricate characters and a solution that won't be served up until the very end--that's the mystery Glitter of Diamonds, by Canadian author N.J. Lindquist. Radio announcers, columnists, and the mismatched detective team of Manziuk and Ryan converge in this baseball whodunit. Lindquist makes it easy to join in the dialogue, but before you open your mouth to speak, the puzzle pieces pile up. Don't get too comfortable; there's a twist in the action that will knock you senseless, and everything that glitters is not what it seems.

A wonderful mystery in the classic style  May 20, 2007
I admit it. I didn't want to read this book. I'm not a sports fan. I am REALLY not a sports fan. The only sports I ever watch are the Olympics. So, when I picked up this book I didn't know what to expect. Well, I was delighted. I kept me hooked and reading until the very end. A wonderful mystery in the classic Agatha Christie style.
