Item description for Divas/Aaliyah by Victoria Christopher Murray...
Overview The Divine Divas are elated to reach the talent search finals, but after Aaliyah learns that her mother, the singing sensation Zena, will be the group's mentor, she must now tell her friends that she lied about her mother being dead.
Publishers Description The Divine Divas are going big-time -- to the finals of the Glory 2 God Teen Talent Search. They're just one big win away from a recording contract, and then...well, watch out, gospel music!
When Diamond first thought up the Divine Divas, Aaliyah wasn't sure this was her thing. She loves singing, and everyone says her voice is pretty fine, but since Aaliyah is planning on Harvard and a degree in nuclear physics, winning a recording contract could actually put a crimp in her dreams. Diamond has been her BFF all her life, though, and when Diamond wants something bad, saying no just isn't a choice. Now, with the Divas just winning and winning, even Aaliyah is fired up.
Then they hear the big news. Each top group will have a professional mentor, and the Divine Divas are getting superstar singer Zena. Leading to a secret Aaliyah never thought would get out. Her mother isn't dead: she just chose a singing career over her marriage and her baby girl. So if being a Diva means accepting the mother she can't remember, the mother who didn't care enough to stay, then Aaliyah isn't sure she can bear to stay a Diva even one day longer....

Mothers and Music... Oct 16, 2009
The Divas: Aaliyah by Victoria Christopher Murray is by far my favorite of The Divas series. Diamond, India and Veronique's volumes were all great stories that entertained and enlightened, but there was something about Aaliyah that resonated with me. The fact that becoming a superstar was secondary to her and her focus was more on becoming a nuclear physicist, or maybe that she seemed so grounded, yet fun-loving. Aaliyah has basically gone along with her friends in their desire to become teen Christian singing sensations. She has an awesome voice and loves singing but she has other interests. The one thing she never had, however, was her mother. Her mother, Zena, had chosen to pursue a singing career and left Aaliyah with her father. As far as anyone knows, Zena is dead. So, what will happen when Zena shows up to become musical mentor to The Divas?
Ms. Christopher-Murray does an outstanding job of showing how a young woman feels when the person she loved most reenters her life. She allows Aaliyah to be angry and stubborn. She also shows through Aaliyah's growth how the decisions we make impact those around us. Even with the lessons, The Divas: Aaliyah is still a fun book that all teens should read and enjoy. I also recommend the entire series to all readers, the books are simply wonderful.
