Item description for Beyond Retribution: A New Testament Vision for Justice, Crime, and Punishment (Studies in Peace and Scripture) by Christopher D. Marshall...

Overview
Recently a growing number of Christians have actively promoted the concept of "restorative justice" and attempted to develop programs for dealing with crime based on restorative principles. But is this approach truly consistent with the teaching of Scripture? To date, very little has been done to test this claim. Beyond Retribution fills a gap by plumbing the New Testament on the topics of crime, justice, and punishment. Christopher Marshall first explores the problems involved in applying ethical teachings from the New Testament to mainstream society. He then surveys the extent to which the New Testament addresses criminal justice issues, looking in particular at the concept of the justice of God in the teachings of Paul and Jesus. He also examines the topic of punishment, reviewing the debate in social thinking over the ethics and purpose of punishment_including capital punishment_and he advocates a new concept of "restorative punishment." The result of this engaging work is a biblically based challenge to imitate the way of Christ in dealing with both victims and offenders.

Reviews - What do customers think about Beyond Retribution: A New Testament Vision for Justice, Crime, and Punishment (Studies in Peace and Scripture)?

Understanding God's Justice  Mar 18, 2006
Many Christians have been raised on a simplistic"an eye for an eye" theology. This book challenges one's thinking and theology about God's perspective of justice and mercy. God is still an advocate for the voiceless and powerless in our society. This book is a must read for any Christian that has a prison or jail ministry, a must read for any Pastor that ministers to the marginalized, and a must read for any Christian that believes in the God's Kingdom Coming on Earth as it is in Heaven.

Excellent, groundbreaking book  Sep 21, 2004
Marshall's book is thoroughly enjoyable and incredibly insightful. It is the first book of its kind and examines the issue from a broad and well-informed perspective.

Marshall shows God's heart for reconciliaton and redemption convincingly and makes the Gospel sound like Good News for everyone.

The only thing that detracts from the book is that it is written for theological insiders and would be difficult for anyone not conversant with the issues he raises to engage with.

This book offers a significant and prophetic challenge to historical and contemporary penology, and should be required reading for all aspiring lawyers, pastors, and politicians.

Beyond rehabilitation  Aug 14, 2003
We need to go beyond rehabilitary justice to retributive justice, as the Bible teaches.

The Nature of God's Justice in the New Testament  Aug 3, 2001
This book is unique in that it brings the New Testament vision of Justice into direct and critical conversation with contemporary practices of punishing crime. It provides a rich resource for anyone convinced of the necessity of a turn from retributive justice to restorative justice. Highly recommended.
