Reviews - What do customers think about Windows of the Soul DVD?
Wonderful look at the limitations of our senses Feb 2, 2010
This is a Moody Science Classic, first produced in 1960, and now available on DVD. It's 28 minutes in length, so a nice bite-size lesson. Obviously the cinematography is not as crisp and clear as something produced to day, but this is not a significant hindrance to this video.
This is one of my favorites of the Moody Science Classics series. In this DVD, we take a look at our senses, and the limitations they have in perceiving the world around us. We learn about how our eyes are unable to see ultraviolet light, and we see some bland-looking rocks that become gloriously transformed when we are enabled to see ultraviolet light. We learn how the range of sounds we can hear is limited from sounds that many animals can hear (dog whistle).
But, the most fun, is when it's emphasized that seeing is not done only with the eyes, but primarily in the brain. We see how the image in the eye is upside down and how our brain corrects that. Dr. Irwin Moon, the always enjoyable narrator, dons for a few weeks a special pair of glasses that inverts the image so that things will look upside down to him. How much trouble he has, and then his brain adapts and flips it around for him! We see how our brain will correct images that seem in error, like a window that's trapezoidal in shape, and end up tricking us.
And there's the final spiritual lesson, that just as we have with our own senses a limited perception of the world around us, we have a limited perception of spiritual things in our own strength. This lesson was very brief, and very naturally done.
I would recommend this particular DVD to any Christian family, especially a homeschooling one. I'd recommend the series in general as well, but if you want to start with only 1 or 2 DVDs, this is one of the best.
