El personaje prinicipal, Campuzano, ignora que su amada doa Estefana, le ha contagiado una enfermedad venrea de graves efectos fsicos y psicolgicos. Durante su estancia en el hospital ser cuando escuche los coloquios de los perros, que por inverosmiles, causarn gran impresin en la vida del personaje. No dejar de escribirlos, maravillndose de lo sabio de los dilogos, propios de eruditos ms que de animales. Confiesa sus imaginaciones a su amigo el licenciado Peralta, el cual, sin dejar de mostrarnos su jocosidad ante tal asunto, accede a leer el coloquio con la condicin de que Campuzano deje de intentar convencerle de lo verdico del caso. El protagonista, que est convencido de que su vida a sido una vida de perros, se identificar metafricamente con el perro Berganza, que ser escuchado por el perro Cipin, su amigo Peralta. La metfora est en la representacin del perro como animal fiel y leal, que es la actitud de Campuzano para con la vida, y que es recompensado con ingratitud y a veces con crueldad. Se llega a cuestionar si existe diferencia entre la irracionalidad animal y la racionalidad humana.

Miguel de Cervantes Saavedra (1547-1616) found some initial success as a playwright.From 1571 through 1575, he fought with the Spanish fleet and served in garrisons throughout Italy. He was then captured by the Turks in Algiers and held prisoner for five years. Upon his return to Spain, he held various diplomatic and government posts but faced constant financial hardship and served two terms in prison. His fame was secured with the publication of Don Quixote (1605) and its sequel, which was published shortly before his death.

Walter Starkie, noted authority on Spanish history and culture, eminent lecturer, scholar and writer, was for more than twenty years a professor at Dublin University.From 1940 to 1955, he was director of the British Institution in Madrid."

Miguel de Cervantes Saavedra was born in 1547 and died in 1615.
