New York never looked so good! Apr 18, 2007
This is a fantastic coffeetable book of New York City!
The images in the book were taken by Michael Yamashita. This guy knows what he is doing as far as aerial photography goes. All the images are of top notch quality, crisp, clear and fresh. The detail is amazing, the architecture of the buildings is so exquisite and vivid in the images that the book feels more like a live aerial tour of this great metropolis. Most of the photos were taken in the early morning and evening. This is why the buildings are glowing in the soft but warm orange glow of a rising and/or setting sun. These are some of the best photos I have ever seen.
The text was written by Elizabeth Bibb. This woman is very talented when it comes to connecting the history of the city to its modern reality and in describing the various points of interests in each image. The text not only makes the book an enjoyable read, but it also brings this massive city into a historical perspective which gives greater meanings to all my trips to New York. This book changes the way you see, think, and experience the Big Apple.
The book itself is divided into five sections plus an introduction. It's biased towards Manhattan, in fact all images are exclusively focused on Manhattan with the exception of a Yankee Stadium image (obviously in the Bronx) and images of the Statue of Liberty which most people don't know is in New Jersey and not in New York. Other than that, everything else is biased on Manhattan, eventhough the some of the other boroughs and the New Jersey side is visible in the background of some photos.
The book is well designed. Very elegant and sophisticated look and feel. The binding is sturdy and well done. The pages are glossy and if you have oily skin (like me) you will notice your finger prints on the pages after touching them. However, and much to my surprise, the oily finger prints dissapear after you close the book with no damage to the pages or the photos!
This book is excellent, the best aerial photography book on New York to date. I highly recommend this book for anyone remotely interested or associated with this great city, because quite frankly New York never looked so good!
