In light of recent natural disasters (New Orleans for example) and the terrorist events of 2001, this book has a certain relevance. It models how people might evacuate a given area. Which might be a building, ship, plane or train. The research papers systematically study how to design such an area for optimal evacuation. Most [all?] seem to have been originally in German.
Several papers perform mathematical modelling. Where pedestrians might be cellular automata, acting under an impulse or potential function, coupled with some randomness. The latter is essential for any realistic situation. Dynamic networks are also used to model the flow.
Ideas like directional sound are studied. Possibly lifesavers, when used as audible beacons. But much remains to be done, to optimise their design.

Everyone, who deals with these topics or safety issues in general (not security, though) the volume provides an overview over the newest results and the state of the art. This will also be useful for the practitioner who is mainly interested in applying the results. At the same time the reader can get thorough information about "pedestrian dynamics" and "evacuation simulation". Furthermore, a whole part of the book is concerned with the evacuation of passenger ships. This book is unique concerning the topics it deals with (a strong focus on simulation). It can be strongly recommended to everyone who is engaged in this area (not only scientists).
