Item description for Encyclopedia of Catholic Social Thought, Social Science, and Social Policy (2-Volume Set) by Michael L. Coulter & Stephen M. Krason...

Overview
With more than 800 topics from over 300 contributors, Encyclopedia of Catholic Social Thought, Social Science, and Social Policy is a comprehensive introduction to the Catholic vision of society, social relations, and the human being. It combines theoretical work on important topics and scholarly disciplines (e.g., economics, moral theology, natural law, philosophy, psychology); social science perspectives on a variety of topics (e.g., alcoholism and drug abuse, forgiveness and mercy, globalization); and treatment of practical policy implications that flow from applying the Catholic religious, moral, and intellectual tradition to contemporary issues (e.g., abortion, assisted suicide, immigration policy, school choice, torture). The book reflects a broad range of Catholic thought that is international in scope, but with an emphasis on the American situation. Its interdisciplinary approach offers insights from a variety of perspectives: theological, philosophical, historical, economical, sociological, political, psychological, and legal. The work will appeal to individuals who want a clear and accurate introduction to Catholic social thought and a Catholic-informed social science and social policy. One certainly need not be a devotee and advocate for Catholic social thinking to find this encyclopedia of good use as a handy reference tool.

Reviews - What do customers think about Encyclopedia of Catholic Social Thought, Social Science, and Social Policy (2-Volume Set)?

A valuable resource -- two suggestions  Jan 16, 2008
This is a valuable resource, which helps fill what was a void in Catholic reference materials. I have just two suggestions for the next edition: (1) add an entry on either "Alcoholics Anonymous" or "Twelve Step Programs," which revolutionized public and professional thinking about addiction, and provided the base for effective alternative therapies; and (2) include a psychologist and an economist on the editorial team, to help ensure comprehensive coverage of the social sciences.

Human Service Work Resource  Oct 30, 2007
The Encyclopedia fills a vital need within Catholic scholarship, and is especially important to those of us who work in the nonprofit human service sector, whose principles are primarily built on the social teaching of the Church.

Additionally, it continues the very important work of informing the social sciences--which for so long were adrift and cut off from their spiritual roots--with the knowledge from the Church needed to find success in the comforting and transformation of suffering human beings.

In my field of criminal justice, one of the major issues of my work is that 70 % of the people released from prison return to prison within three years. This failure of traditional criminal rehabilitation can mostly be laid at the lack of understanding of the spiritual dimension of human transformation, and within the pages of this two volume set are the ideas and principles able to guide practitioners towards more effective practice with clients, and is also quite useful fleshing out concepts and proposal language for fund development.

I use it regularly since buying it a few weeks ago and heartily endorse it for your library.

This Contributor Rates It Five Stars  Oct 14, 2007
First, I make the appropriate disclosure: I personally contributed 14 articles to the Encyclopedia at issue. (Also note that I receive no money from sales of the Encyclopedia and did not receive any monetary payment for my contributions.) I have also reviewed many other books at this site.com. I hereby request any reviewer to notify me personally at sobrino95@hotmail.com of any errors in the 14 articles I wrote: Gospel Foundations (of Catholic social thought), Pluralism, Democracy, Liberalism, Libertarianism, Marx, Hispanic Catholics, Black Catholics, the Pope's first encyclical Deus Caritas Est, Feminism in the Church, Affirmative Action, Libel & Slander, Separation of Church & State, and Class Conflict. I am not aware of any errors or inaccuracies in any of the articles I wrote. If anyone is, I urge you to disclose the specifics so I can notify the editors forthwith.

In addition, one of the finest Catholic theologians in the United States, systematic theologian Dr. Robert Fastiggi of Detroit's Sacred Heart Major Seminary, also contributed 14 articles: St. Robert Bellarmine; Catholic Theological Society of America; Excommunication; Franciscan Tradition; Hinduism; Islam; Jesus Christ; philosopher Matteo Liberatore; theologian Cardinal Juan de Lugo; Quietism; philosopher Antonio Rosmini; Salvation; Theology; Francisco de Vitoria, father of international law. Another fine professor, also at Sacred Heart, moral theologian Dr. Mark Latkovic, wrote two articles: Investment; Moral Theology. I have read virtually all of the articles by Fastiggi and Latkovic--they were excellent, and I know personally that the authors are first-rate scholars because I have attended their lectures. I have read other articles in the Encyclopedia, and they were also impressive and informative. I have not read the entire Encyclopedia cover-to-cover, and I doubt many purchasers have. But, in my considered and informed judgment, at a minimum, simply gaining access to the 30 articles I have cited above are worth the price of the Encyclopedia, especially for libraries that want to give researchers a view of Catholic social thought that complements what is already out there in this area of study (with the recent this site price cut, the price per article for just these 30 articles is under $4). Is it possible that some reviewers here and elsewhere have allowed ideological or personal biases to skew their assessment of the Encyclopedia? Let's have the full range of views on Catholic social thought. The Encyclopedia helps libraries achieve that goal, when used along with other reference materials in Catholic social thought as any good researcher would always seek to do. Then let the researcher decide for himself or herself without the baggage of intemperate and undocumented negative reviews lacking any semblance of balance. [...]

0 Stars if I Could  Oct 9, 2007
This book is a joke. It's not useful to Catholics or anyone else. I agree with the previous review that it is extremely poorly researched and glaringly inaccurate in many places. For the very expensive price tag, I expected a LOT more and got nothing for that investment.

With three authors, it seems that the book would be written and edited better, but perhaps each of the authors didn't take the time to read the others' work? That would explain why the "encyclopedia" is so disjointed and written in so many different styles.

What a waste of my time... and your time, if you make the colossal mistake of buying this book.

Poor research and overly priced  Sep 30, 2007
Much of this book was factually incorrect I am sad to say. A book purporting to be an "encyclopedia" should really be more well researched. One star.
