Christian Fiction Jan 24, 2008
How many times have we spotted a penny on the ground and walked on by without bothering to pick it up? A single penny wasn't worth the bother. It would not improve the quality of our lives, add to our financial security, or even buy a piece of penny candy.
Jenny Blake spotted a penny embedded in the asphalt in front of a movie theater and walked on by. Even in 1955, the penny had little value, but something compelled her to turn back and retrieve the penny. By picking up the penny that day, Jenny set off a chain of events that impacted her life, and the lives of the people around her.
Set St. Louis in the 1950's, The Penny is a bittersweet tale of a young girl's life. Jenny's father ruled his family with an iron fist. What was passed off as insignificant one day would light a fuse the next. Jenny and her older sister Jean were beaten and humiliated time and time again. Jenny endured the beatings with a stoic air of indifference, but when her father would slip into her bedroom at night and force his attentions on her, she felt dirty and unlovable.
When Jenny ran back to pick up that penny that day, a milk truck had to brake to miss her. Bottles of milk rained down and broken glass flew everywhere. The resulting chaos tripped up a thief making off with a handful of necklaces from Miss Shaw's jewelry store across the street. Grateful, Miss Shaw offered Jenny a job. It was the first of many changes in her life that summer.
Determined to share the experience with Aurelia, a black girl she befriended at school the year before, Jenny slipped out of the house and headed across town. But it was Sunday morning and Aurelia was not home. She found Aurelia at church and was drawn in. God offered hope. It was just a prayer away.
Jenny's growing faith was challenged time and time again, but she saw Christianity at work in small, barely noticeable ways. With Miss Shaw's guidance and Aurelia and her family's acceptance, Jenny comes to understand the truth. Prayers are answered, but not always in the way we expect. Rather than remove a threat, sometimes He gives us the strength to stand up to it. Once Jenny understood that, she was at peace with herself and the people around her.
The Penny is a powerful story with a strong message. An act of kindness, no matter how small, can enrich our lives and the lives of the people around us.
The Penny Dec 26, 2007
This novel was recommended by my cousins wife who is a preacher. My son had laid a penny on my mothers heart as we laid her to rest. This story showed me how to look at my mother's life and all the special qualities she had and the obstacles she had to overcome in life. In return she also taught us to believe in and find the small gifts that are sent our way. Funny how this one penny could find magic in such a great loss. Once again it was the magic penny that reminded me to embrace the gifts that are sent your way even in the face of the greatest losses imaginable. This was made possible by the question asked of me had I read the book The Penny. Small gifts are always there if you accept them and believe.
Very interesting Nov 17, 2007
I have read Joyce's teaching books, listened to her tapes and CDs and watched on TV and in person. Every time I have learned something and my life has improved. When I saw this novel, it made me wonder could such an awesome teacher deliver a great story. Well I wasn't disappointed. It is a heartwarming story and really enjoyable. It moves at the right pace to keep your interest. I highly recommend this novel.
An Easy Read Oct 24, 2007
I have been a fan of Joyce Meyers for a long time, and have read several of her books. This being her first attempt into fiction, I was most anxious to read "The Penny". It had a good story, but was not a book that I simply could not put down.
