Reviews - What do customers think about Fishing Secrets of the Dead?
Brilliant May 7, 2005
This is a book that'll make eyes wet and throats ache -- but make you nod your head and grin, too. It is an elegy to Hadaway's late husband and with that it is something more, a loving appreciation of a strange and special place, the Eastern Shore. The spine of her poetry here is the river that runs past her house and through her life. And yes, to those who haunt the Chester and know the river's code, she does give up fishing secrets: the slice of currents and hidden ledges where the rockfish go. Her verse is spare and edged and true, and it stays with you, sad, funny, and wise.
Secrets Worth Sharing May 4, 2005
Lyrical, haunting, literate, and inspired are what can be said of Meredith Davies Hadaway's poems. Like a summer memory, they are perfect reading to evoke the sounds, smells, tastes of life on the Eastern Shore, her home. Accessible too, these poems each tell a story of pain, loss, and familiarity. Like a companion, Fishing Secrets of the Dead is a book from which to quote, and quote often, and share with friends.
