Dylan Foster's world becomes punctuated with disturbing, inexplicable events when she finds herself in the center of a nightmarish battle with only God-issued spiritual armor and her own wits to protect her.

Publishers Description
Bizarre Encounter Initiates Extreme Spiritual Battle
Dylan Foster's carefully constructed, orderly world begins to fray, thread by thread, the day the eyes of hell turn upon her. After a chance encounter with a creepy, sickly looking stranger, her days become punctuated with disturbing, inexplicable events. Desperate for answers, Dylan seeks not only to extricate herself from the nightmare, but to separate the spiritual from the earthly, friend from foe, angel from devil, good from evil. She's smack in the eye of the battle with only God-issued spiritual armor and her own wits to protect her.
"I saw the first fly alight on the edge of my plate during supper. This was no ordinary fly. It was huge. The size of a small Volkswagen. I could have painted daisies on it and sold rides to small children. "
Hotter than the eyes of hell...
School is back in session, but for psychology professor Dylan Foster, the promise of a new semester is dying in the heat of the late Texas summer. First, there is the bizarre encounter with a ghastly pale stranger. Then her mother's engagement ring turns up--the same ring that was buried with her mother two years before.
Soon, Dylan's carefully ordered world is unraveling, one thread at a time. A former patient accuses her of impropriety, putting her career in jeopardy. A suicide plunges her deeper into shadow. Relationships with colleagues start to crumble. And then there are those flies in her house...
Dylan Foster is about to get a crash course in spiritual warfare--and a glimpse of her own small but significant role in a vast eternal conflict. But when the dust settles, will anything be left of her life as she knows it?
Story Behind the Book
The reality of spiritual warfare has long fascinated Melanie Wells. A practicing private counselor, she is energized by pondering the significance of seemingly mundane events, the importance of individual faithfulness, and the connection between the spiritual realm and the empirical world. She emphasizes these themes in her book, where the first scene came to her in a dream.

Reviews - What do customers think about When the Day of Evil Comes (Day of Evil Series #1): A Novel of Suspense (Day of Evil Series)?

Great start to the series!  Aug 22, 2008
Don't let the creepy bald guy on the cover of Melanie Wells's When the Day of Evil Comes Scare You. Scratch that: he's a scary guy. But don't let that stop you from reading this first book in Wells's series of religious thrillers. (The third in the series was published in 2008.) You won't be sorry.

Dylan Foster is a psychology professor at Southern Methodist University--thirty-three, unmarried, Catholic; she's smart and likable, an interesting lecturer, popular with students. But one day, inexplicably, some seriously strange things begin to happen to her, starting when she meets the creepy guy from the book's cover at a faculty picnic in Austin. Pasty and hairless and sickly looking, the man--he introduces himself as Peter Terry--is unsettling. The kind of guy your reptilian brain recognizes as dangerous. You cross the street when you see him coming. You keep your children close. But this meeting is just the first in a parade of strange things that happen to Dylan and that threaten to destroy her comfortable life: her mother's one-of-a-kind wedding ring, buried with her two years earlier, turns up in a gift box in Dylan's truck; a delusional colleague and a former patient start denouncing her; fat, late-summer flies start plaguing her, an endless succession of them alighting on her dishes and sheets. In the end, Dylan is forced to try to clear her name by confronting evil--in its human incarnation certainly, and perhaps in demonic form as well.

There is much to commend this book. Dylan is a great character. The plot is gripping. The writing style is interesting. I do have a few complaints. This being a religious thriller, there is naturally quite a lot of reference to things religious--prayers and Biblical passages and so on. But sometimes these references don't seem to fit naturally into the narrative, as if they were shoehorned in. Second, in the second chapter Dylan talks to some colleagues about the possibility that her problems are the result of demonic activity. I wish this hadn't been spelled out so clearly, or at least so early. It takes some of the chill out of the creepy things Dylan has been experiencing. Finally, some of the book's mysteries are cleared up at the end of this volume, but a lot is left up in the air. If we conceive of the book as part of a larger whole in which our questions will be answered, then this isn't problematic. Taken on its own, however, it leaves us scratching our heads a bit.

But the above complaints are minor. I enjoyed this book very much and am eager to read more in the series.

Dylan Foster, Book One  Jun 3, 2008
When the Day of Evil Comes is book one of the Dylan Foster series and, with Dylan Foster, it introduces a literary character whose company I think I would enjoy in the real world. Dylan, a Southern Methodist University psychology professor, is one of those down-to-earth types not easily impressed by status symbols and those who flaunt them, someone who never quite loses her sense of humor about herself and those around her no matter what crazy turns her life might take, including the discovery that a demon from the spirit world is determined to destroy her.

That particular demon, who calls himself Peter Terry, is a bald, emaciated and very white-skinned man with an ugly horizontal wound across his back who makes contact with Dylan at a faculty outing that she is attending with fellow SMU professors. Spooky as the man is from the start, Dylan does not realize his intentions (or his true nature) toward her until she makes the connection between him and the student who suddenly files a formal complaint that Dylan made sexual advances toward him during his visits to her office for psychological counseling.

Dylan is removed from the classroom pending a formal investigation of the charges against her and, just when she thinks that things could not possibly get any worse, they do. She knows, of course, that she cannot defend herself by explaining to the investigative committee that her problems are being caused by harassment from a local demon. But when a second student's sanity is threatened by the same Peter Terry, Dylan realizes that she has to move quickly and heads for Chicago hoping to learn more about the young man whose complaint started all of her problems.

When the Day of Evil Comes is a mystery and thriller combination that will satisfy fans of both genres. In order to defend herself in Dallas, Dylan Foster has to delve into the secrets of a Chicago family that has kept them hidden for decades, and she has to do it while enduring psychological tricks and physical threats from Peter Terry. Dylan defends herself from this demon through prayer, help from one little girl's personal angel, and by covering herself with the spiritual armor described in Ephesians, chapter six.

This struggle between the forces of good and evil fits firmly into the Christian fiction genre but Melanie Wells makes her religious points in a way that are not so obvious or preachy that they intrude on the story being told. Dylan Foster is the kind of Christian that most of us probably are: a little bit lazy about the whole thing at times but quick to ask for help when we find ourselves over our heads in some kind of panic situation. The message is that there are bigger and better weapons on the side of good than on the side of evil - if we remember to ask for them.

I have not read the second novel in the series yet but my first exposure to Dylan Foster and Peter Terry was with book three, My Soul to Keep. After reading that one, I was a little surprised to learn that I had just finished something in the Christian fiction genre, a type of reading I rarely do, because its religious references are so much more subtle than in this first book. But now that I have read When the Day of Evil Comes it is easy to see why these books have been embraced by the Christian community, and I suggest that they be read in order if at all possible in order to get their full impact.
Excellent  Mar 3, 2008
I ordered this book for my husband, who is an avid reader...he finished it in two days, and I think it took him two days because he works all day...had I given it to him on a Saturday, he would have finished it in one!

He wants the other two in this series, and says this book was a 'super read'! I'll take his word for it, fiction is not my bag!
Exciting ,But Totally Unbelievable And Irresponsible Scripturally!  Oct 24, 2007
This book grabbed me from the first page and carried me through and all night reading session until I finished it. However I cannot give it more stars, since some major elements to the story are never explained,such as**(Spoilers Ahead)** we never learn what the connection was between her dead mother and Peter Terry,and why Dylan,and the two young men were even targets of Peter Terry?! So you devour this book,hoping this engossing mystery will be solved,but it never is! The author rips the readers off!

The really serious concern I have is the unbelievability of how lightly she/Dylan takes her spiritual walk in the midst of this spiritual battle,even after she comes to believe her friend Tony when he tells her that this is exactly what is happening.

It is also *ludicrous* for the author to make it sound like all Dylan (who has been a *dead* Christian) has to do to "put on the whole armor of God" is to read Ephesians 6 in her Bible,and POOF she is suddenly empowered and protected!

There is no way in the world that a so-called Christian who has no personal relationship with the Lord ,not even a child's knowlege of scripture,and has no familiarity with exercising faith comes even close to having on the *full armor of God*! This offended and angered me,because this is a dangerously deceitful idea to plant in the mind of those who may be new believers in Christ!

Eph 6:13 Wherefore take unto you the whole armour of God, that ye may be able to withstand in the evil day, and having done all, to stand.

Eph 6:14 Stand therefore, having your loins girt about with truth, and having on the breastplate of righteousness;

*Dylan lies daily and even keeps a mental tally of the lies she has told for the day,and yet never prays for forgiveness for this!* Her loins are not protected,neither is she wearing the breastplate of righteousness!

Eph 6:15 And your feet shod with the preparation of the gospel of peace;

Eph 6:16 Above all, taking the shield of faith, wherewith ye shall be able to quench all the fiery darts of the wicked.

*She has no experience with putting her faith in God,and never convincingly even does this.* So she has no shield!

Eph 6:17 And take the helmet of salvation, and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God:

Dylan is the type of person who calls herself a Christian,but most of the world,Christian and non-Christian,alike, would recognize as never being truly *saved* as there has been no miracle of regeneration in her. So she has no helmet. and since she doesn't even have a limited knowlege of scripture, she has *neither helmet,nor sword*!

Eph 6:18 Praying always with all prayer and supplication in the Spirit, and watching thereunto with all perseverance and supplication for all saints;

Dylan tells us she has never had much of a prayer life,(therefore no true relationship with God),and she never truly develops either,even in the heat of this spiritual battle. Therefore, no power of prayer,nor faith.

So there is absolutely no way this woman is prepared to battle a demonic assault. In that way,this book is horribly,irresponsibly and dangerously,unscriptural!

At least authors such as Fank Peretti,and Ted Dekker can weave thrilling spiritual warfare tales with Christian warriors who are/or become, more equipped spiritually,to claim victory over the enemy! Their books also put more emphasis on the importance of the warrior's spiritual walk and standing. In that way,their books could at least be said to be inspiring and edifying,which this book most certainly is not,in any way.

So I would not like to see new believers read this book at all!

Shame On the author Melanie Wells for even claiming her character Dylan as a Christian,while not even showing her need to grow more mature spiritually to be victorious in such a spiritual battle!
My new favorite author!  Oct 9, 2007
Melanie Wells has created an incredible story and a very likable character in Dylan Foster! I could NOT put this book down! She will send goose bumps up your spine one minute and have you laughing out loud the next! I HIGHLY recommend this book!
