Item description for Journey to the Well: 12 Lessons on Personal Transformation by Vashti Murphy McKenzie...
Overview The national bestseller is now in paperback, and this trailblazing Bishop's spiritual lessons can empower any woman to conquer adversity, at every stage of her life.
Publishers Description In the tradition of empowering spiritual writers such as Ilanya Vanzant, Bishop Vashti McKenzie offers women a Christian path to personal transformation. A groundbreaking preacher who, in 2000, became the first woman to serve as bishop in the African Methodist Episcopal Church, Bishop McKenzie is renowned for her eloquence and passion in the pulpit. Now she brings her inspirational message to readers through the biblical story of the meeting at the well between Jesus and the Samaritan woman. In twelve lessons, McKenzie interweaves the Samaritan woman's experiences with contemporary personal stories, Bible quotations, life-affirming sayings, and meditational activities. Through them she shows women that if they hold onto hope and listen for their moments of epiphany, they can accomplish anything.

A gift from my sister. Apr 13, 2006
This book was a christmas gift from my sister. Journey to the well helped me travel down a well worn road. You have already thought about the things that she has written about your spiritual journey, but with how much perspective. Vashti's book helped me to reflect on my image in the well. Looking at myself objectively in the well, I can change things I dont want to see.

I have been enriched by reading this book by Bishop McKenzie. It came to my attention as a recommended reading posted at my school, Trinity College of D.C. Not aware of Bishop McKenzie, I was intrigued by the summary of this book and decided to read it. What a tremendous blessing. As I read it, I realized that so many women travel often to the well in our daily lives. Just trying our best, no matter how painful, to do what we can until things get better. Like the Samarian woman at the well, we yearned for something different in our lives that would free us from many of the cultural, societal, and spiritual bonds that bind us. Dr. Mckenzie reminds us systematically through the additional Biblical references, exercises, and journal assignments that support this blessed encounter that we are waiting for our opportunity to meet Jesus at the well. Pausing to answer this blessed stranger's questions and boldly asking questions of Him healed her. Reading this book, we are also healed. I encourage women from all walks of life, age or religion to read this book. Like the Samarian woman who met Jesus at the well, you, too will find your voice. through His grace be healed to go forth and tell everyone of the man you just met who knew everything about you and loves you dearly. Peace
A Journey of Self Preservation May 25, 2004
I've always been receptive to new ideas, in fact I keep my eyes and ears open for opportunities to grow and in, Journey To The Well, Bishop Vashti M. McKenzie has nourished me. There are twelve lessons and at the end of each are exercises designed to enhance, enrich, and ready us.
Through Bishop Vashti M. McKenzie's teachings we learn not to discount our selves, how to add value to our lives, and emerge from behind veils of anonymity. In her own words she states, "That until a healthy, loving relationship that promotes your full potential happens, resist the urge to become a perpetual lady in waiting, never living fully and never feeling complete or whole. Live your life to the fullest - now and always." Her message is, "When we live to the fullest we are innovative and not merely duplicating."
Just as Jesus reached out to the masses, so is she. She speaks in terms that we all can understand and relate to. Her modern day parables are compelling and make excellent analogies.

For my review I would like to share my Poem, Dedicated to Mrs. Vashti - Journey to The Well: Chapter 10 In The Eyes Of Me: Looking in the eyes of Me, I could do this, why not? There's nothing to see. I've been in this mirror a thousand times, there's never been anything unusual I'd find. I've stood there, done my hair, brushed my teeth and washed my face, I've been at least a thousand times to this place. Looking at me, what is the big deal, when I'm looking, I'm looking at what is real! Wait, stop what you're doing, look again for the first time. Look pass the nose the mouth, look at the eyes. Stop again, look close, look pass the brows and the eyelashes, look at your soul, look at the truth, look at the real YOU! Don't be afraid, keep your eyes open, no ones there but you and God, listen to what is spoken. Continue to look, go deeper & deeper, if you feel like you may lose yourself, rememeber He's a keeper. If your legs get weak and you feel like you can't stand, don't worry he'll carry you like the footprints in the sand. Now speak what you see. What is in the eyes of me? Holy Spirit help me, this is too hard! Oh Lord Jesus I know you are here. I'm so ashamed, I see hurt, pain & fear! Is this me! Is this who I am! This is the truth that I see inside of me? How could this be, this does not reflect you Lord, your perfect love cast out fear! But it's there, I see it, I confess it, I know it - I forgot about it, now I remember it. "I'm Awake Now"! no more pretending,no letting it reside comfortably anymore. It has to go. There is power, strength and courage beyond what I can see, it's also in the eyes of me. I'll look and keep looking; affirming God's love and the promises he's made. I'll look and keep looking until hurt, pain and fear all fade. I'll look and keep looking until I see what Jesus sees when he looks inside the eyes of me.
There's more than water at the Well Jul 22, 2003
Journey to the Well takes an otherwise short scripture and explores the role of Jesus in the lives of everyday women. McKenzie delves into our lives and roles as women and shows how we can experience a closer relationship with our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ. Her style of writing is engaging and inviting and kept me savoring with anticipation of each new chapter. A must read for all women, especially those needing affirmation of the importance of their relationship with the Most High.
