Item description for Jochen Gerz: Save The Moon by Matteo Balduzzi Roberta Valtorta...
Save the Moon documents a public art work conceived and developed by artist Jochen Gerz.
This is a work made by people and for people. Without these people the work would not exist. In total, 2,734 people participated in this public project by having their portraits taken. Over the course of the project, the people photographed took part in a demonstration holding their own portraits on banners in the streets of Cinisello Balsamo, near Milan. They demonstrated alone or alongside others for an hour after sunset. The works were then publicly displayed in an exhibition at the Museum of Contemporary Photography of Cinisello Balsamo. When the show was dismantled, the photographs were randomly given back to the participants; each person received a portrait of someone else to hang in their homes, thus giving rise to a permanent public collection. The book presents the artist's idea behind Save the Moon and its realization through the portraits as well as the photo documentation of the different phases of the project.
