Item description for Remember When: A Tribute to the Vanishing Rural Landscape by Mary Rufledt Gladitsch...
Remember When is a tribute to a way of life that is rapidly disappearing. For those whose heart aches when they drive by a decrepit barn or whose thoughts turn to the past when they see an abandoned old schoolhouse, this is the perfect gift. Take a Pass Jan 26, 2006
Ms. Glaitsch had a great concept and then she ruined it. She has taken old photographs from working farms and communities and then shown a comparative current-time photo as a contrast. This is very powerful but as soon as I began to read the middle school quality poetry/prose that she added, she lost me. It would have been better to relate a memory in a line or two of her own experiences than force herself to write badly. To be fair, some verses are better than others but I was disappointed in this book overall.
A wonderful exercise in nostalgia Dec 13, 2001
Mary Gladitsch's Remember When: A Tribute To The Vanish Rural Landscape showcases the true spirit of rural life as expressed through a combination of commentary text and photography. The singular approach taken by Gladitsch is to have a photo from the past lie opposite to a photo from today so that we can clearly see how time has changed things in rural American scenarios. A welcome tribute and highly recommended commentary on an American way of life that is rapidly disappearing as the nation as a whole proceeds into an every more populated and expanded urban civilization, Remember When is more than a wonderful exercise in nostalgia, it is also a landmark publication that raises awareness of what those now decrepit barns and abandoned old schoolhouses meant and mean, then and now. No Midwest community library should be without a copy of Remember When for their patrons enjoyment and consideration.
A Thoughtful and Creative Way to Remember the Country Life Nov 11, 2001
Mary Gladitsch's second book of poetry causes those who grew up in rural America to remember and honor those who lived their lives in a simpler time. The creative collection of old photos, present day photos and poetry lead the reader to go through the book over and over again, smiling, crying, and sharing personal stories with anyone who will listen. Her reflections and tributes bring back memories of one's own life. This is a great book for anyone who grew up in the country or wishes they had.
