Item description for Seeing the Text: Exegesis for Students of Greek and Hebrew by Mary H. Schertz & Perry B. Yoder...
Overview Initially, learning languages can mean much memorization and lends itself to few tangible results. Shertz and Yoder have placed exegesis within the broader context of hermeneutics, so the student can see the rationale for what he's doing. Includes fine suggestions for using computers to complement classroom work.
"Seeing the Text" integrates language study with theories and methods of interpretation. The purpose of the book is to help students increase their facility with the biblical languages while at the same time incorporating exegetical and literary skills and methods. The book thus not only provides a wider theoretical and methodological horizon for language study but also builds a solid, text-based foundation for further biblical studies. Because it is increasingly the case that seminarians do not have the opportunity to study both Greek and Hebrew, examples in both languages are included whenever possible to create a metalinguistic theoretical understanding. The book is, therefore, designed and suitable for both intermediate Hebrew students and intermediate Greek students. Finally, the book includes suggestions for using the computer to facilitate language learning and exegetical work in order to help students develop the skills necessary to sustain their language skills with the aid of computer software when they are no longer engaged in formal study.

Reviews - What do customers think about Seeing the Text: Exegesis for Students of Greek and Hebrew?
Don't believe the subtitle. Jul 10, 2006
This book is a wonderful exposition of a method and organization for biblical analysis. Method because the book steps through most of the most important ways that ministers and students should evaluate scripture. The authors also present suggestions for organizing the work of scriptural analysis in such a way that you can use the analysis for your current sermon, bible study, or paper and save it for future reference for other things. While the authors do present ideas for integrating biblical language understanding in the analysis process they also give examples in English. While the student of biblical languages is well served by the incorporation of language understanding but those that have not studied languages could still benefit from this texts method and organization. The methods selected for the highlight of the text are firm and strong. The organization provided by the notebook that the text indorses is a great way to build on effort in biblical analysis to make your work valuable and reusable in the future.
