Mary-Ellen's close relationship with her Savior is evident in her poetry, meditations and short stories in Grace Notes. The characters come alive and are envisioned as friends and neighbors of the author. Her interpretations of the biblical stories reveal deep insights into their truths. She brings out hidden wisdom in a way that can be understood by all. She retells some of them in ways that are enlightening, yet, she is careful not to add her imagination as biblical truth, but leaves a clear distinction between scripture text and imagination.
Workers for the Kingdom (based on Matthew 20: 1-16) is one of the best interpretations of this scripture I've ever read, I've struggled with this scripture and its true meaning for many years. She has retold this little parable in a way that I can understand what Jesus was trying to say.
Truths of the Heart ( based on 1 Corinthians 2:9-16 and 12: 4-12) reveals it's meaning under the light of Mary Ellen's words. She opens the meditation with the sentence: "Being able to discern spiritual truth is a gift of God." In reading through Grace Notes, I believe that she truly possesses this gift.
Her book is not one to be read through lightly and put aside. It reveals its truths slowly and prayerfully. It is the type of book to be taken, one meditation or section at a time, and read slowly in a prayerful mood. In that way, its wisdom and truths sink into our minds and heart, revealing to us the deep things of the Spirit.
Grace Notes would be a great book to use as a devotional book for a Sunday School Class or any group that opens with a meditation. An entire program could be built from any one entry in the book, using the scripture she recommends and discussing the truths she brings forth. Her poetry brings forth simple truths that could not be spoken as clearly in any other form.
If I had to choose one word to describe Grace Notes, it would be sincerity. The author conveys that feeling from the beginning to the end.
