Item description for Revival by Martyn Lloyd-Jones & J. I. Packer...
Overview Clear and decisive messages about the need for revival in each generation, the circumstances leading to past revivals and how to rekindle revival today. From the former minister of Westminster Chapel.
In every era the church needs revival--certainly today as much as ever. And in the heart of every committed Christian there is the longing for personal revival--to know the quality and depths of spiritual reality, and the presence of God in one's personal life.
This was the deepest desire of Dr. Martyn Lloyd-Jones, one of the great 20th-century Bible expositors. It was also the purpose behind this series of messages which were first given on the 100th anniversary of the Great Revival which started in Wales, and swept across England and throughout the United States and to the far corners of the world. As Dr. Lloyd-Jones recognized, it is a rare time in the history of the church when there is a great outpouring of the Holy Spirit-- and a time of special interest of every Christian who longs for revival today.
As Dr. J. I. Packer writes in his foreword, Dr. Lloyd-Jones believed in "the necessity of revival--that is, a quickening divine visitation--as the only vent that can avert ultimate spiritual disaster. The thrustful urgency of the sermons in this book testifies to the depth of his conviction that without revival in the church there is really no hope for the Western world at all."
Dr. Lloyd-Jones deftly draws principles from the lives of Old and New Testament characters as well as expounding some of the great prayers of the Bible. Clearly and forcefully, he presents a masterful exposition of the circumstances accompanying revival in the past, why each generation needs it, and how it will come about today. We must come to the sovereign God, forsake our sin, and wait upon Him for this special, essential outpouring. God, bring us revival

An Instructive Presentation on Revival Mar 30, 2010
Lloyd Jones' book on revival includes a series of sermons on various topics all related to his interpretation of historic revivals in light of Scripture. The initiative for the talks was the remembrance of a revival that occured in Great Britain 100 years prior to the date the sermons were delivered. Lloyd-Jones' purpose is to show his listeners (readers) what is behind God's revivals to encourage them/us to begin earnestly seeking God and asking him to bring revival. A strong emphasis throughout the book is that God and not man causes revival. The sermons grow out of Lloyd Jones' interpretation of Scripture that includes the Exodus deliverance of Israel and God's relationship with Moses, as well as words of the prophets. I would have liked to see more of the New Testament incorporated into this book.
Although this book is losing its contemporary feel, it is not outdated at all. Lloyd-Jones' critique of his culture is true for our culture today. An important outcome of this book for readers is that it points us to God for revival rather than any human initiatives for "church growth" or evangelism. Revival, as described by Lloyd-Jones, comes from God and has overwhelmingly supernatural consequences.
Awesome Book. Beyond words Jun 27, 2008
As J.I. Packer put it in the forword, no other book today deals with Revival to this depth. MLJ's language is very deep yet simple enough for any true believer to grasp.
I was greatly inspired by this book to diligently pray for an outpouring of the Holy Spirit, in a time where Christianity is defined by music, style, large congregations and buildings. Inspite of all the 'cool' things people do today in churches to attract crowds, there is no life in the worship. To a large extent, churches are spiritually dead today.
The Bridgegroom(Christ) has gone far away from his bride(the church), and our prayer to Him should be to have mercy on her, visit her, cleanse her, revive her and rejoice in her.
MLJ's exposition of this verse was a delight to me. Isaiah 62:6-7 You who call on the LORD, give yourselves no rest, and give him no rest till he establishes Jerusalem and makes her the praise of the earth.
Praise God for pastors such as MLJ.
Great Book - It will revive your spirit. Dec 21, 2007

"Oh that thou wouldest rend the heavens!" - Isa 64:1 Apr 19, 2006
Lloyd-Jones preached this series of sermons in 1957-58 to celebrate the centennial anniversary of the great revival of 1858. He leads us through many texts of the Bible, explains the context of each verse, and the relevance of each verse to true revival. The first half of the book is dedicated to the habits of man that hinder revival, as was the masterful method of the Doctor.
Once these hindrances are addressed, MLJ gets into what happens in a revival and from that point on, you feel that you must experience these outpourings of the Holy Spirit that the Doctor describes. His amazing expositions of Scripture inspire you to look for other texts in the Bible that represent revival.
One unique teaching of MLJ is that God sends and ends revival on His own terms. Once again, he gives all the glory to God, whereas other teachers ONLY talk about what WE need to do for God to send revival. Lloyd-Jones differs from that teaching by explaining that God is sovereign in all things, ESPECIALLY when and where, and for how long, He chooses to bless us with an overwhelming sense of His presence.
Based upon that fact, MLJ always comes back to the fact that we do not have to wait on a massive worldwide revival to experience the love and presence of God. The individual Christian can experience these things, if only we seek the Lord with all of our heart.
For an even better experience of the Doctor's preaching, order these sermons on CD from Soundword in the U.S. or the MLJ Recording Trust in the UK.

Must read regarding REVIVAL Jun 16, 1999
It touches my heart. I think all the Christians should think about this topic and work up with it. The auther used simple verses of Bible and described problems of churches. Most important thing, he figured out the step we can follow and the concept we should keep in mind.
