Item description for Rescuing Sprite: A Dog Lover's Story of Joy and Anguish by Mark R. Levin...

A radio talk-show host describes his family's relationship with a remarkable rescue dog named Sprite, a beautiful, loving, and gentle animal whose deteriorating health taught the entire family a lesson in friendship, love, joy, and grief.

Publishers Description
In "Rescuing Sprite, "Mark Levin tells of the joy and anguish of life with a rescue dog: the intimate and powerful story of his family and the dog they have for too short a time.
Although Mark Levin is known as a constitutional lawyer and a nationally syndicated broadcaster, he is, first and foremost, a dog lover. In 1998, he and his family welcomed a half-Border Collie/half-Cocker Spaniel they named Pepsi into their lives. Six years later, his wife and son persuaded him to adopt a dog from the local shelter, a Spaniel mix. It turned out he was older than originally thought, and he was the most beautiful dog they'd ever seen. They named him Sprite. Their lives would never be the same.
Sprite and Pepsi became fast friends. They did everything together, from rummaging through the trash to loudly greeting the deliveryman. And the Levin family fell in love with him -- with his gentle nature, beautiful face and soft, huggable fur. But on Halloween night, shortly after joining their family, Sprite suddenly collapsed and was rushed to the animal hospital. It was the first of many such visits, and the start of a long journey for the Levin family, filled with much joy and anguish.
During the next two years, Sprite and Pepsi were inseparable. And Sprite's bond with the Levin family deepened. Friends, neighbors, and even Mark's radio audience came to know and love Sprite. As Mark's daughter turned eighteen and graduated from high school and Mark's son turned fifteen, Sprite's health deteriorated -- even as his spirits remained high and his beauty and grace continued to inspire. Between Thanksgiving and Christmas 2006, the Levin family said their emotional final goodbye. Crushed and consumed with grief, Mark turned to family, friends, and fans for help.
But new hope came when the Levins least expected it.
"Rescuing Sprite" is a stunningly intimate look at the love between a family and a dog, one that movingly shows, in Mark Levin's words, that "in the end, we humans are the lucky ones."
The author will donate a portion of his proceeds from the sale of this book to animal shelters.

Reviews - What do customers think about Rescuing Sprite: A Dog Lover's Story of Joy and Anguish?

The name dropping should have been left out  Mar 24, 2008
Although the book does a nice job promoting rescue dogs, it also does a nice job promoting the author's republican friends! I thought all his name dropping was unnecessary and distracting.
I Laughed and Cried  Mar 24, 2008
This is a wonderful book as soon as I started reading it I could not put it down. I laughed and cried and it touched my heart.
Must be a Dog Lover to read & Understand  Mar 22, 2008
If you do not LOVE dogs - don't waste your time reading this book b/c you will not UNDERSTAND. It was okay - but it kind of dragged on - it was easy to read but not necessarily COMPELLING. I mean, you kind of KNOW what is going to happen just by reading the cover. We all have DOG/animal stories - the only difference is.... this guy WROTE about it. His experience is in black & white. I'm sure it made him feel better sharing his story & it is GOOD he is donating profits to an animal shelter. "DOG PEOPLE" will most likely enjoy reading this despite it being sad.
Cry If You MUST  Mar 20, 2008
I'm a sucker for a good dog story and this one is among the best. Mark Levin did an exceptional job of explaining the link between humans and their canine companions, about unconditional love and how the loss of that love leaves a hole in your heart forever.

For all the dog lovers in the world, reading this story about "SRPITE" will make you think of every dog you've ever owned and have you grieving all over again for their loss in your lives!

I wept through 118 pages of this book so it's not for the faint of heart. Then again, as I said, I'm just a sucker for a good dog story.
Disappointing   Mar 20, 2008
Each time I hear of a new book involving dogs and our bond of love with them I am eager to rush to read it. Of the significant number of my previous reads I have to say this was the most uninspiring and worst of any. The author's writing style is juevenile and displays a lack of creative and moving vocabulary. He does not weave a good tale. The content of the story itself is mundane, nothing particularly insightful in this book. I found the author to be self surving as well. There are some lovely stories of love and loss of pets available. This is not one of them. Sure we dog lovers can be easily moved to tears at a sad story of losing one of dear pets, but that alone does not a good read make.
