The Foundations of Karl Rahner Nov 24, 2007
This made Rahner's Foundations much easier to understand. It is a good place to go before reading the actual text. Would definitely recommend it for a student with a paper to write. Very easy to understand. Must still have the original text if you want to use quotations.
Invaluable resource! Dec 30, 2005
Dr. Mark Fischer has done a great service for students as well as all readers of Karl Rahner's Foundations of Christian Faith. While Rahner's summa is brilliant, the grammar and awkward sentence structure make it very difficult to work through the book. Dr. Fischer has written a synopsis of each paragraph highlighting the salient points. His writing style is very clear and direct. Moreover, the Index which Fischer provides to Dych's English translation is invaluable for research - since there isn't an index in Dych's book. (Personally, I feel the Index alone is worth the price of the book!) The Introduction is also very helpful in understanding Rahner's thought and the structure of Foundations. Anyone purchasing Rahner's Foundations of Christian Faith should also purchase this book. In the Introduction Dr. Fischer stated that he wrote this book in response to his students' complaints on the difficulty of reading Rahner. Thank you Dr. Fischer for listening to your students!
Don't read Rahner without it Dec 26, 2005
Love him or hate him Karl Rahner was one of the most influential Roman Catholic theologians of the 20th century. As an entry into his general theology Foundations of Christian Faith is an important work. It is also nearly impenetrable. Sentences run on for paragraphs, and you need to chart them in order to parse what he is saying. Thus a small library of works explaining Rahner's explanation of his theology.
Try as they might, and especially in the case of the most popular explanatory work prior to this one, they did little to help the student of theology understand what Rahner was saying. Thus the importance of this work. For the first time students have a book that will aid in their understanding of Rahner's ideas presented in a straight forward manner. By going section by section, literally page by page, Mark Fischer provides a brief synopsis of the ideas and themes that Rahner has presented. If you are having difficulty understanding Foundations, and believe me you are not alone, then you have found the work you need. And as a bonus this book includes an index of Foundations of Christian Faith, something that has been needed for a long time and is nearly worth the price of the book by itself.
This is not a "Cliff Notes" for Rahner, it is a critical introduction to the ideas and concepts of a critical theological work. I would not go so far as to say that you could read this instead of Rahner's book, but it certainly makes reading, and more importantly understanding, Foundations much easier.
