Item description for Loving Jesus by Mark Allan Powell...
Overview In this biblical spirituality for today, Powells earnest plea is for Christians to revisit their faith not by blazing in religious enthusiasm but by harboring a steadier flame and deeper commitment. Living at the poetic heart of faith, he argues, entails seeing the coordinates of religious life--love, understanding, truth, hope, and especially devotion--in a new way. Powell espouses the old fashioned idea of piety. Drawing on his wide knowledge of the Bible and Christian tradition, as well as insights from his own journey, he shows how simple religious practices move us beyond the old certitudes of a naive and youthful faith into the less certain but more bracing terrain of a second naivete, a closer walk with Jesus.
Publishers Description The essence of spirituality is loving God, says Powell. The Bible, the Talmud, and the Qu'ran all direct their followers not merely to believe in God, to trust God, to obey God, and to serve God - but to love God. Can we learn to love God?In this biblical spirituality for today, Powell's earnest plea is for Christians to revisit their faith not by blazing in religious enthusiasm but by harboring a steadier flame and deeper commitment. Reviews - What do customers think about Loving Jesus?
WONDERFUL BOOK FOR A LENTEN JOURNEY Mar 26, 2007
The author has an everyday life way of explaining his point of view. He gives you some facts - tries your hypothesis and then breaks it down for you before you know it - and gives you a way to meet Jesus and understand him that you haven't felt or thought of before. Its a great book, an easy read and truly enjoyable and faith inspiring.
Loving Jesus Mar 15, 2006
Excellent--very readable, yet profound. Something I think even a non-practicing Christian could enjoy and benefit from.
Finally, Another Way to Be "Evangelical" May 24, 2005
This is excellent grace-filled theology without being "theological." Offers a way to joyous Christianity without neglecting life's ambiguities. Takes ecclesiology (the church) seriously while acknowledging the power of American individualism. This is a way home to the historic church for people who want a lively faith. If you love someone, send them "Loving Jesus." --Pastor Eidsvoll
