Los jefes fue el primer libro publicado por este autor (1959) y con el cual obtuvo su primer reconocimiento literario, el Premio Leopoldo Alas. Cuando escribi Los cachorros, el escritor peruano era ya dueo de todas sus facultades narrativas, razn por la que el mundo al que da vida es un muestrario de la diversidad de las pasiones personales y colectivas. Quin mat a Palomino Molero? es un retrato de la impotencia de un individuo ante la corrupcin de la sociedad. El hablador es una muestra de la habilidad narrativa de Vargas Llosa: dos relatos alternados confluyen en una demostracin de la existencia de un inconsciente colectivo que hace a los individuos experimentar momentos de ficcin que reafirman el significado de la existencia. Elogio de la madrastra es la primera incursin de Mario Vargas Llosa en la literatura ertica. En este magnfico relato la perversidad y la sensualidad, la culpa y el deseo se entreveran hasta dar forma a una de las piezas ms logradas de este gnero y que ms tarde alcanzara su apoteosis en Los cuadernos de don Rigoberto (Alfaguara, 1997)

Nacido en la ciudad peruana de Arequipa en 1936, Vargas Llosa se ha caracterizado por su vocacin de escritor, un ejercicio fiel a ese propsito y una vocacin que confiesa en sus memorias "El pez en el agua" (1993) como una rebelin contra la autoridad paterna. Las primeras experiencias con la escritura fueron para Vargas Llosa las de un reportero precoz que se inicia como columnista en varios peridicos locales de Lima y de Piura, apenas terminado el colegio. Convencido de que el suyo es el mundo de las palabras, vuelve a Lima para estudiar Letras y Derecho, en la Universidad de San Marcos, en 1953. Escriba ya entonces cuentos y empez a publicarlos en varios peridicos. La continuidad de su trabajo como novelista no ha impedido que ejerza tambin como crtico literario, columnista de prensa y autor teatral. Particip como candidato a la presidencia de Per en 1990. Recuperado para la literatura se nacionaliza espaol en 1993, y desde 1996 suma a su actividad como escritor plural la de acadmico de la Lengua, donde ingres con un discurso sobre Azorn.
