Item description for Margo Veillon: Painting Egypt: The Masterpiece Collection at the American University in Cairo (Masterpieces from Egypt Over Nearly a Century) by Bruno Ronfard & Margo Veillon...
Margo Veillon, one of Egypt's best loved artists, here presents a sampling of her work from throughout her career, as represented in a legacy bequeathed to the American University in Cairo. The collection includes work from across the decades of her career as well as across a variety of media. Although Margo has lived part of her life in Europe, it is clearly Egypt that has held her imagination in all these long years of artistic innovation. One strand of her work is characterized by an ability to capture and depict the energy of a specific moment in time, be it a toss of wheat in the air to separate the chaff, the stoic bride in a wedding procession, or a horse dancing in a tent at a mulid. The stones, sands, and constantly changing light of the desert have been the inspiration for many years for another major line of artistic expression. And a third strand has been her exploration of all that can be seen, not seen, and sensed in one place, in her remarkable series of Global Perspectives. These threads and others no less individual and innovative make up the extraordinarily rich tapestry of Margo Veillon's artistic career, as brought together in the AUC Permanent Collection.

Reviews - What do customers think about Margo Veillon: Painting Egypt: The Masterpiece Collection at the American University in Cairo (Masterpieces from Egypt Over Nearly a Century)?
Very unique Feb 3, 2010
Margo Veillon was born a century ago to Swiss and Austrian parents in Egypt, where she resided for most of her long life (She died only a few years ago). Independent, or rebellious, from a very early age, her parents dispatched her to a boarding school in Switzerland after she was expelled from school in Egypt. She would then go to Paris for a few years to mingle and train in the "art scene" before going back to reside in Egypt. She routinely traveled to Europe, among other destinations, for the rest of her life. A very large majority of her work is focused on things Egyptian.
I have 4 publications of various Veillion collections including this one. I like them all, but this is my favorite ( Painting Egypt - Hard cover - 2003 - American University in Cairo press), which was the original "lure" to buy the other 3. My reviews of all 4 are almost identical. Unlike the other 3, this contains some of her work outside of Egypt, and is also broader in its depiction of Egyptian life in the older and more "traditional" parts of cities, and in the countryside. Each of the other 3 focuses on a more specific theme. Some of her work appears in more than one of the 4 volumes.
I am not an artist, and I realize that some "real art critics" might find the 5 stars to be on the generous side, but I took into consideration the fact that I have not come across any other publications, or actual paintings, even in Egypt, that depict these scenes and subjects. Vellion seems to have this rare ability to see things both as a local, and as an outsider looking from the outside in, at the same time.
If you are interested in this sort of thing you will probably like this collection.
