Flowers of the Amazon Forest: The Botanical Art of Margaret Mee Nov 2, 2007
This is a nice book with many of Margaret Mee's paintings included in good color reproduction, but a very similar but more expansive book, entitled "Margaret Mee's this site: The Diaries of an Artist Explorer," published also by Kew Gardens, is a better buy.
Margaret Mee was a hero Feb 13, 2007
Margaret Mee was an amazing woman who explored the this site in Brazil, collected and sketched plants native to that region, and produced lovely botanical illustrations of these plants. She endured many hardships during her expeditions, but always persevered in her work. She was also a champion for conservation. This book contains excerpts from her diaries, photos from her travels and reproductions of her sketches and finished art. The reproductions of the artwork are the best of all of her books that I have seen. The colors are bright and fresh. In other reproductions the colors, especially greens are flattened and the plants look one dimensional. These have a full range of values and show off the work to its advantage. Definitely a five star book for me.
