Reviews - What do customers think about Miss Match (Lauren Holbrook Novel)?

Not the best out there  Sep 11, 2008
When i bought this book I did not know that it was a christian story, it was quite a shock to me. This wouldn't have been a big deal if only the author could have stick to telling the story instead of telling us passages of the bible all the time or saying through the main character that non-christians are not going to heaven, etc... I though that ruined the story at certain parts. The story was very slow, now I just discover that the author made 3 books on the Miss Match series so maybe that's why she tries to drag them in a very poor way. The ending was just disappointing, it did not give me closure of any kind, but it did make me wanna order Rematch to see how the main love interest ends up, hmmm, sneaky
A must-read for chick-lit fans  Sep 9, 2008
I thoroughly enjoyed this book (to the utter frustration of my husband and 4 children whom I neglected for an entire afternoon and evening after downloading it to my kindle). Very witty and clever--refreshing even!

Her clever interweaving of chick-flick quotes (all of which I knew before the reference was given...) had me laughing out loud (again, perplexing my poor husband). Madamoiselle Erynn, we are kindred spirits!

A great read! Now, if only the third book would come out on kindle...
Not bad, but definately for YOUNG adults.  Aug 1, 2008
This was an okay book. I actually bought all three books (not sure why). This first one started out okay, but got cheesey quick. By the time I started the second book (Rematch) I wanted to sucker punch "Laurie-girl" and then choke the life out of her (okay, so that is a bit angry). I had quite a few problems with the book and wish I had not bought them to begin with. They would certainly be good books for teens/young adults who are looking for Christian themes (and a little light romance), but for a pushing-30's woman... well, nah. On the other hand, these are the authors first books and she was in her early 20's when she wrote them. Who knows what the future holds for her.
not horrible, but has an annoying heroine  Aug 1, 2008
Like some of you, I knew that I was picking up a Christian chick-lit book and was expecting that perspective. The story is well-written, although it did bother me that more loose ends were not tied at the end. Yes, I know it's the first of a trilogy... but honestly, I'm not sure there's that much actual material here. How far can she stretch this out? And it may be that I'm 40 and curmudgeonly about it, but Lauren's youthful, cutesy, irresponsible attitude is just downright annoying. Not all of us mature at the same rate, I understand, but I just flat didn't like her. I don't think I was this immature at 15, and I don't think I'd have been friends with Lauren.

Moreover, I recently picked up my Collected Works of Jane Austen (okay, right after I rented the Keira Knightley version of Pride and Prejudice and found myself saying, "Huh. I don't remember THAT scene in the original," not that it matters much when you star a Darcy with that incredible voice... but I digress) and read it through. Yep. This is an updated version of "Emma." Now, I liked Emma -- both the book and its title character -- and I am not against updates and rewrites. But good grief, keep the likeable characters likeable, please! I have not read the sequels and am not likely to do so, but I can tell you right now that Brandon the Best Friend/Mr. Knightley stand-in and Lauren/Emma will wind up together, having come to their senses.

If you can tolerate Lauren, more power to ya. Otherwise, this is a nice clean romantic comedy, but that's all it's got going for it.
Ugh.  Jun 13, 2008
Unlike the other negative reviewers, I knew that this book was Christian chick-lit when I picked it up at my local Christian book store. What I didn't realize, and what took me by surprise, was that the main character was so completely unlikeable and immature. I think that the book is written to suggest that the protagonist is gregarious and overly likeable, but instead she comes off as pathetic and immature. Aspects that I believe are intended to read as "cute" (for instance, stalking her good friends who are on a date) are instead creepy. Her description of one of the characters as miserable and "spinsterish" and overall sad because she's single and - GASP! - 55 years old! is just offensive. The author was off-base with a lot of her characterizations: being jealous of 18 year olds who have found happiness through marriage is awkward to me - with divorce rates as high as they are these days, I don't think that young marriage should be celebrated. But the author has great faith (pun intended) in Christians to always make the right decision and excuses her characters' bad behaviors because evidently, as long as you're a Christian, you can do no wrong. I don't think that having Christ as an active part of your life means, for instance, that you should get engaged after two dates as characters in this book do. Then again, this whole book reads as though it was written by a naive 15 year old describing what she thought "adult life" would be like.
