Why People Get Sick of Christians Dec 24, 2006
This review is of the title only. I did not read the book, will not read the book, am completely put off by the title and can not believe that a professed "Christian" believes that he knows what makes Christians sick. One could make any number of strong cases for good health through proper nutrition, but the unmitigated gall of anyone who professes to KNOW the will of God in relation to why Christians (only Christians) get sick is evidence of a sickness of another type. I do not profess to have the education, knowledge or life experience to support that claim, just a gut feeling that no one, particularly a professed Christian, has the right to judge why any other person, let alone a Christian, gets sick. What cloud did you fall off of Mr. Malkmus.
Being raised Christian and having faith in the fundamentals of the teachings of Christ, I worry when ever any person supposes that they have the knowledge of God to help me do what they KNOW is right for me, my body or my spirit. At best you may have an opinion and to that I will listen. To boldly present one's self as having the fundamental knowledge to write a book titled, "Why Christians Get Sick" is reason alone for me to run the other way. No doubt there are glimmers of truth, possibly even oceans of knowledge between the covers of this book, but anyone knowing why ... exactly why ... Christians get sick ... Mr. Malkums, your elevated presumption of your own Christian values is what makes me sick.
My five-star review (from 2000) has changed to one star (in 2006). May 15, 2006
It may not be "easy" to admit this, but I must. My perspective has changed...
I wrote a five-star review for this book in 2000 ("A Bombshell...," etc.), and I am now older and wiser (I was about 18 when I wrote it). Experience and research has taught me vast amounts about human nutrition and the human body. I now realize that many of the statements I made in that review do not contain 100% percent truth, to state it mildly. When it comes to nutrition, "100% truth" is a work-in-progress figure that may only be reached on an individualized basis, anyway. After all, every human being has a different body as well as a different medical and nutritional history.
In order to enrich people with wisdom and insights I have acquired over the past years, I would like to refer individuals to the Weston A. Price Foundation (an Internet search for their official site will illuminate you with its rational, intelligent, and mind-opening nutritional insights). I realize that healthy, organic beef, chicken, and other sources of protein and animal fat are very important for the growth and health of human cells. The bad fats, believe it or not, are mostly polyunsaturated fats (which may cause cancer and trigger weight gain) and, of course, hydrogenated fats (trans fats), which cause heart disease. I want to state emphatically that saturated fat and cholesterol are HEALTHY nutrients (both are indispensable nutrients for the growth and repair of cell structures and membranes, and, of course, the brain).
In addition, the heart runs predominantly on energy from fats. I know that some vegans/vegetarians following a diet similar to the one in this book began to experience heart palpitations, muscle wasting, and scattered and foggy thinking after a while. Such a diet does not supply optimal nutrients for brain, muscle, and heart health. Also, animal sources such as beef are incredibly important for the form of iron which the body most-easily absorbs (unlike the harder-to-digest iron from plant sources). I know that some following this book's diet began to experience anemia, caused, in part, by iron deficiency. In addition, optimal forms of many other nutrients such as vitamin A and vitamin B12 (of course) are virtually unavailable outside of the animal kingdom.
Vegan or vegetarian diets are almost always high-carbohydrate, low-protein, low-fat diets, which have been shown to be very unhealthy in the long term and devoid of nutrients for the above-mentioned body systems. Instead, a diet composed of high fat, high protein, and a moderate amount of unrefined (preferably fruit-and-vegetable-based) carbohydrates is ideal for most people (that is, if it contains protein and fat from naturally-raised or organic animal sources). In addition, coconut oil is a highly nourishing medium-chain saturated fat which has nourished people and helped them to thrive for thousands of years.
The great energy gains and improved health that initially manifest with this book's vegan diet are almost always short-term phenomena caused by the removal of junk food and refined, industrialized carbohydrates from the diet-and the inclusion of healthy plant nutrients. However, once this detox period is over, which takes no longer than a couple months (at the most) to complete, deficiency diseases and muscle wasting begin to set in. I wouldn't even suggest this diet for detoxification purposes, for the risk of deficiency is simply too great. I suspect that over eighty percent of the glowing testimonials for a diet such as this are written within the first couple months (or weeks) of its adoption. After a while, many people intuitively move back to animal proteins and fats, because their brain is physically screaming out for them on a biological-not just a psychological-level.
Please forgive my earlier review. From my current privileged perspective I regret ever having written it. In some ways I feel like a totally different person from the one who exhibited the "think-I-know-it-all" attitude which was expressed when I wrote that review. Again, my perspective has changed drastically and has advanced considerably. In other words, I'm thankful that I no longer adhere to the sub-optimal (to put it politely) ideas in this book.
Please, I encourage you to check out the Weston A. Price Foundation. Their nutritional and dietary advice is a quantum leap ahead of information such as this. I criticize much of Rev. Malkmus' message, and I hope he is well intentioned. After all, I humbly believe I was well intentioned when I wrote my old five-star review all those years back.
Thanks for reading.
For shame.... Nov 10, 2005
Anyone with the smallest bit of sense knows that *true* Christians never get sick. If this gentleman was ever really sick, then he simply did not read his bible enough or he had a lack of faith. Furthermore, if you just read Dr. Don Colbert's book about what Jesus ate and cooked (even while on the cross), then this should never pose a problem. But, there's always the possibility that, even if you do have a lack of faith, or are not a real Christian, just make sure that before you finally kick the bucket, you pray to God to heal you, say you're sorry and promise to go to church, say you belive in Him, change your wicked ways, and soon you'll be dancing in the sunshine. That always works.
Amazing! May 22, 2005
I just saw Jesus in a vision and He told me that he wants you to send all your money to George H. Malkmus so he can write more books to teach all of you to be healthy so the Messiah can delay dealing with your idiotic spirits in heaven.
