For thirty years Catholic Christians have been turning and returning to this remarkable spiritual classic in which a Trappist monk speaks clearly and perceptively to the world of priest, religious or layperson still "in the world." It has been called a modern Introduction to the Devout Life. It is a book that takes the question of personal sanctity and relates it to a Pauline vision of the Church as the Mystical Body of Christ.

Register your artisan biography and upload your photo! Dom Eugene Boylan, O.C.R., was an Irish-born Trappist monk and writer who was born in 1904 and died in 1964. Ordained a priest in 1937, he began writing on spiritual topics, and in the 1940s he published two books, This Tremendous Lover and Difficulties in Mental Prayer, which became international bestsellers and were translated into many languages. In the late 1950s he undertook an extensive lecture tour of the United States ("This is the best retreat we ever had at Gethsemani," commented Thomas Merton after Boylan's visit there), and in 1962 he was elected the fourth abbot of Mount St. Joseph Abbey in Roscrea, Ireland. Two years later he died in an automobile accident.

Book every serious modern Christian needs to read.  Dec 17, 1998
This book clearly teaches the concept of the mystical body of Christ as proposed by St. Paul in the scriptures. This book had a great impact on my life as a Christ. It clearly explains what the Christian life is about and how all Christians are interrelated to one another in the Body of Christ. A must read for every serious Christian.
A Timeless "Introduction to the Devout Life."  Oct 30, 1998
I wondered if any modern writer had ever penned a handbook for pursuing a life with Christ in the Catholic Church, until I found this book. Though written by a Trappist Monk around 1945, "This Tremendous Lover" speaks directly to every man and woman who struggles to find room for God amid a hectic life and in a culture often at odds with God's values. From prayer to suffering to the sacraments to marriage to work, "This Tremendous Lover" shows the reader the way to deeper union with Christ, and ultimately to salvation. This is truly a timeless "Introduction to the Devout Life."
