Item description for The World Seen from the Distance of a Small Village: The House Call to the World by Tadeusz Macieyczyk...

Overview
Coming from the confines of the Iron Curtain, Dr. Maciejczyk journeyed to America and made a life for himself as a countryside doctor. This average, working man was doing his job with love and skill. One day new demands on his profession required a decision which collided with his understanding of the moral aspect of his vocation. Responding, he chose the less traveled road. The consequences were harsh and painful. Surprisingly, the results gave him also something he didn't expect. They challenged him to grow, to acquire a new awareness, new vision, and brought to the surface his unknown, unused talent. The decision he made changed him, preparing him for deeper participation in life. This compilation of correspondence encapsulates a journey to justice, and provides insight on a variety of cultural, political, spiritual, and moral issues along the way.

Reviews - What do customers think about The World Seen from the Distance of a Small Village: The House Call to the World?

An American Struggle  Jan 18, 2008
Maciejczyk is stubborn. He has his beliefs and he is just unwilling to accept the ideas of others. For example, he refuses to think that health care should cost as much as it does. He bull-headedly thinks that doctors should be held immediately responsible for their decisions. And he's not afraid to, unflinchingly, not charge his patients more. In these letters both to and from public officials, hospitals, lawyers, and others, Maciejczyk shows us his struggle to fight the encroachment of insurance costs on our medical care. He writes his letters with eloquence and makes his position clear. He makes many convincing arguments against the then newfound practice of mandatory malpractice insurance and illustrates, clearly, that the ultimate cost for such a thing falls back on the patients.

The World Seen from the Distance of a Small Village is a kind of conversation about health care between the people who have to interface with it directly. Both sides make points that you can identify with. By using the letters themselves, Maciejczyk allows people to see the initial, uninterpreted perspectives of the parties involved, and to see first hand how the changes affected the lives of doctors. At times, the letters get repetitious, and some of the letters could probably have been omitted while keeping the message intact.

Due to the enormity of the subject and the length of time involved, it is best not to digest all in one sitting, which is fine because each letter is a very digestible unit of reading. It's great reading if you want to know more about health care, a very important issue in our times, and the personal, letter style of the book makes the material that much easier to access. It's worth a look.

For thoughtful readers  Jan 20, 2007
I grew up in a small town about 10 miles from where Dr. Maciejczyk practices and he was, in fact, my parents' family doctor during the 70s and 80s. I knew him as a good man but I had no idea that he was such a prolific writer.

My brother gave me this book for Christmas and I am about a third of the way through it. It's a little difficult to read because of the language issue but it is interesting to see what has happened in the 20 years since he began those writings. Even if you have problems as you begin reading, stick with it. You get used to his language style and it begins to read more easily.

Dr. M was right on so many issues, especially those of the welfare state, the effects of malpractice insurance and government interference in healthcare delivery. I don't agree with all of his political viewpoints but I certainly can understand them.

He has a unique view on the world and it's well worth your time and effort to look at it.
