Dare to Dream Aug 5, 2003
With imagination, anyone can have wings. That's the message in M.A. Kokos Lambrou's WWW.WINGS, a delightful story about an energetic little girl who finds mischief around every corner. Vanessa is a creative little girl whose adventures will make any reader smile. Vanessa dares to dream, "thinks big" and ultimately learns to strike a balance between keeping her head in the clouds while keeping her feet on the ground. The author presents the story in language most kids will relate to and enjoy. Lambrou uses creative strategies through her writing to teach crucial concepts such as believing in the impossible and discovering the true joy of learning. She encourages imagination, the use of different learning styles, and the exploration of the reader's own ideas. WWW.WINGS is a most enjoyable book that kids can easily follow, relate to, and undoubtedly love.
Lambrou knows Children! Aug 5, 2003
Lambrou has captured the mind of children in her first novel. Vanessa is a believable character, whose choices land her in trouble not only with her teacher, but also at home with her parents and her brother. The content of the dialogue will be so familiar to children and parents that they might be inclined to ask whether Lambrou has listened in to family conversations. Vanessa's choices, which ultimately cause her problems, are similar to those many children face at school and at home. And while Vanessa uses imagination and the website ... to help her problem-solve, she still must face the reality of consequences. The story captures the interest and imagination of the reader because Lambrou provides relfective activities at the end of each chapter to engage the reader in making connections to the text and the character. She has created a variety of responses to the situations, the characters and the decisions. Occasionaly, she gives the reader insight into the author's mind as she shares clues into why she made certain name choices. Lambrou knows children. She knows how they think and feel. Once you meet Vanessa, you might be inclined to think that Lambrou knows YOU, too.
Great for book club discussion! Aug 5, 2003
The author, "Maria", has written a book that will appeal to today's elementary-age children. The main character reflects today's school-age children who are intelligent, curious, interested in computers and the Internet, and that have a little good old-fashioned mischief in their character. The fast moving pace and short chapters are sure to keep a child reader's attention. The thought provoking and conversation starting activity-like interludes between chapters will appeal to adults that want to increase parent-child interaction related to book reading. This would be a great book for children's book club discussion!
A Book of Great Imagination! Apr 15, 2003
WWW.WINGS is a wonderfully written book full of fantasy, humor, imagination, and description. Mrs. Lambrou was my fourth grade teacher and she has a wonderful imagination. She always knows what kids like. In this book, there is "somthing to think about" after every chapter. WWW.WINGS is a book that you will not want to put down!
