Publishers Description
"America: A Patriotic Primer" is a succinct history of the United States, an ABC of the principles on which this country was founded, and a book for children and families to pore over, discuss, and cherish.
"A is for "America, "
the land that we love.
B is for the" Birthday
"of this country of ours...."
To choose the twenty-six people and ideas that comprise the book, Lynne Cheney has drawn on a lifetime of learning about the American past, and on the inspiration that comes from witnessing recent history firsthand. Illustrator Robin Preiss Glasser imbues Mrs. Cheney's words with childlike joy through her exuberant drawings. Together they have created a patriotic primer, a book that teaches history by celebrating the diversity, tenacity, and faith of the American people.
This A to Z of America frames the story -- and the miracle -- of our country.

Reviews - What do customers think about America : A Patriotic Primer?

America : A Patriotic Primer  Feb 13, 2007

Book A {atriotic Primer  Apr 29, 2006
It is a excellent book for both children and adults. I have purchased this book for my Granddaughter who is 6 years old.

Left wing anti-semites don't read this   Dec 1, 2005
Why is it that outside Savage and Coulter it is the lefties among us that use the most intemperate language. The absurdity of an anti-semite calling a reasoned intelligent woman like Ms. Cheney a Nazi is laughable. Take a look in the mirror pal

YIPPIE-SKIPPIE, Mrs. Cheney!  Aug 22, 2005
With patriotic colors of red and blue, symbolic frames and borders full of educational themed graphics of brotherhood, victories and celebrations, the pages of this book BURST with motion "from sea to shining sea". Each page softly depicts the heart-felt words of freedom, equality, constitution, declaration, patriotism, rights, valor and heroes. The modernized historical quotations such as "The noblest question in the world is: What good may I do in it?" from Benjamin Franklin is most encouraging for children who are looking for 'action' around every corner... and what child isn't? My favorite page is "Y... is for YOU and all you will be in this greatest of countries, the land of the free." What a lovely way to connect America's children with their country at an early age while providing a foundational glimpse of the development of America's backbone. YIPPIE-SKIPPIE, Mrs. Cheney... way to go!

Primer: look it up, axe-grinders  Jul 15, 2005
Cheney wrote this as an historical primer, a guide to the basic elements of U.S. history. While it is not a "warts and all" tome, it is meant to spur kids to pursue a further interest in the topic. Given the basic facts that she presents (in a wonderfully scaffolded way that can be used for kids from 1 to 10 and possibly older), Cheney provides parents with an opportunity to show their children that this nation is something to be immensely proud of while leaving room for discussion of our mistakes as well.

And for the record, "N is for Native Americans... who came here first" may offend some but the simple statement begs kids to ask "well then... WHAT HAPPENED?".

Don't let the discussion scare you.
