Erik's distrust of alternative medicine prevents him from helping her, and Kim will have to go it alone. Being the senior surgeon, Erik is in the position to make or break Kim's credibility, and he's torn between his feelings for her and his loathing for her beliefs.
As Kim pushes forward with her plans of gaining approval for her pilot program, their professional standoff bleeds over into their budding romance and ignites tension for those who practice within St. Vincent's walls.

Price 's Novel Showcases Mind and Medicine Relationship Jul 5, 2006
The first time I saw the exquisitely designed "mind over medicine" cover of Donovan's Paradigm, I had no doubt that this novel by Lynn Price had great potential for making a significant impact on its readers.
The strength and finesse of a surgeon holding a scalpel is effectively overshadowed by the gentle and serene flow of energy and warmth of the human touch. Little did I know that I was guaranteed an E-ticket ride into a world of two types of medicine that are as opposite as night and day, and an eye of a hurricane of debate over traditional medicine enhanced by available alternative medicine options.
Renowned surgeon, Dr. Erik Behler, and "new-kid-on-the-block" surgeon/ integrative health proponent, Dr. Kim Donovan, find themselves entwined in a budding intimate relationship until Behler's professionalism is challenged by Donovan's goal of integrating alternative approaches to pain relief in the hospital where both doctors practice. Neither surgeon is willing to back down from their disciplines of practice, and the result is a tumultuous, often harsh, love/hate relationship with a backdrop of patient needs hanging in the balance.
In her novel, Price expertly addresses both sides of the traditional vs. alternative medicine debate. A reader unfamiliar with the practices of Reiki massage and other forms of relaxation and pain control will come away from this novel with a greater understanding of the mind/body relationship and how it can effectively enhance a patient's post-surgical recovery and rehabilitation.
While Price gently educates, I never felt overwhelmed or bullied into changing my view of medicine, however, as a chronic pain sufferer for the last 10 years, I found myself researching clinics in my area that provide alternative medicine options while under my physician's care.
Donovan's Paradigm is a refreshing novel with true to life conversation and vivid character development. It has a straightforward, believable cast of characters whose relationships are diverse, gritty and, at times, deeply caring of each other.
I strongly recommend Donovan's Paradigm for medical professionals as well as readers who seek out stories that are both entertaining and have important information about a practice like integrative/alternative medicine; a practice that deserves greater attention and respect.
