Item description for A Separate God: Journal of an Amish Girl by Lucinda Streiker-Schmidt...

Overview
"A separate God? Musingly, I remembered the question of my childhood. We were outsiders now. Perhaps there was no separate God, but only varying degrees of the same God. Perhaps he expected more from some than others." Raised in an Old Order Amish family, Rachel, much like many young girls, dreamed of living a life of joy and freedom. However, her stringent upbringing prevented her from embracing the life she imagined. A Separate God by Lucinda Streiker-Schmidt follows Rachel through her pilgrimage from beneath the shackles of oppression, abuse, and dissatisfaction into the pillar of the liberty of self discovery. After years of reluctantly submitting to their rigid principles, Rachel finally finds the courage to resist the Old Order Amish structure and discover healing from a culture which altered far more than just her appearance and habits. Streiker-Schmidt explores an Amish society more complex than the somber garb they wear and the horse-drawn carriages they use, but one which is as riddled with hypocrisy as the great society-a world Rachel struggled unendingly to adapt to. Lucinda resides in a Midwestern town and maintains close relationships with her family, treasuring time spent with them, and her friends, both secular and Amish. "

Reviews - What do customers think about A Separate God?

Rachel Discerned God's Truth and Embodied Joy of Life  Apr 20, 2010
I read a local newspaper review of this book, saying that the author would be doing a book signing at a local coffee shop. Living in an Amish community for a couple of years now, we have Amish friends of various types. It was a pleasure to meet Lucinda Streiker-Schmidt, the author, and she is as beautiful as her picture on her book back cover. There were many people in line, so I didn't hang out to chat, but I bought two books, one for me and one for a local Amish young woman who is in the process of leaving the Amish community and turning "English." The catalyst for her departure was that her mother was angry after catching her studying the Bible. As challenging as it was for her to move outside her culture, so heavily indoctrinated, she did so, just as "Rachel" did. Just last week! When I picked her up for a day together of looking through some of my English clothes which she could have, sharing the details of what is going on with her lately, and setting up an email account for her new cell phone, I also handed her the keys to my car. She just got her driving permit, and she had really driven only one time, that morning. So she drove to and from my home several miles away, even in the dark coming home. When I had just a week before given a copy of this book to her, she read it in one sitting. She loved the book and said she could really relate to Rachel. Yet, it's so important to remember that this young friend of mine has the beautiful mind and heart that she does partly because of her wonderful parents who tried so hard to do what they believed was right. And now she hopes to move on with her life and hopes to get her GED and then enroll at a Bible college.

Thanks to Lucinda Streiker-Schmidt, the author, for having the courage to write about her experiences growing up in an Amish community (presented as fiction to protect the innocent people in her life). Her writing style is easy to follow, always making the reader want more!

We love our Amish friends and neighbors for who they are, and people in other cultures are no better or worse than the Amish, generally speaking. I honor those Amish people who stand up for what they believe without bending to today's postmodern generational mantra of tolerance to everything EXCEPT Christianity. If we want to know the Truth of God, it's all right there in the Holy Bible. And it's been proven beyond any other "sacred" international text by manuscript evidence, archeological evidence, prophesy evidence, and statistical evidence. There is no "Separate God" who is real, no Savior other than Jesus. There is nothing we have to do to assure our own salvation, like dressing as the Amish do, or driving horses and buggies, except to accept Jesus Christ as our Savior and live our lives by the covenant of the Lord. Good works follows salvation; it's not something we do to gain it.

Rachel had it right from the time she was a little girl. Yet, she had to endure heartache after heartache until she finally became free of the captivity of her upbringing and their rules.

I am looking forward to Lucinda's next book!

Great read  Feb 16, 2010
This is a great book that was written from the heart... She was very honest and up front about her life, about her feelings and how she still loves her family, she just can not be a part of their lives on a day to day basis.

Excellent!  Sep 23, 2009
I purchased this book from this site because every time I went to buy it from the bookstores, they were out of the book... this was a good clue that it was an incredible book. It was very well written in the fact that you truly felt as if you were Rachel in the book. I became her and felt her pain, love and victories as she went through them. I cried, laughed and felt her incredible freedom and victories that she experienced. I will not finish a book unless it interests me right away, this book did just that. I could not put it down. I read it in two evenings... incredible read. I have always been interested in the Amish communities and their beliefs and what their lives are like. I really hope this book is made into a movie... Rachel was an amazing woman with an incredible spirit! I was so impressed with her tenacity and admired her for the things she went through and loved more! a lot of people would become bitter and hate, but she rose above and loved more... amazing! I would recommend this book to everyone! Love prevails!

This book will fill your eyes with tears and at the same time fill your heart with hope.
Once I started reading this Journal of an Amish Girl, I was unable to put it down.
Lucinda has been blessed with the true gift of a writer who makes you feel as if you are living through each and every page.
I highly recommend this book.

You will be glad you read this.  Aug 17, 2009
I purchased this book after a friend recommended it. I didn't know what to expect but was glad that I read it.

Ms. Streiker-Schmidt has a knack for taking the reader into the world of the Amish, relating instances that could have been real-life. It tugged at my emotions throughout the book.

I would recommend this book to everyone. Enjoy reading the journal of an Amish girl.
