Reviews - What do customers think about Phoenix: Architecture/Art/Regeneration?

Shows What Can be Done  Apr 26, 2005
First comment, this book is not about Phoenix, Arizona. It's about the Phoenix Initiative, an experiment in rebuilding the center of a city. In this case the city is Coventry (England). And not unlike what was done in several US cities such as Baltimore and San Antonio the results have been surprising. In each of these cities, there has been concern about protecting and in this case restoring the unique culture of the city. The center city of Coventry was a devastating raid by the Germans during the Blitz of the Second World War.

The book itself is very well done. It contains a series of essays from the artistic standpoint, the architectural (from the designers), from art consultants, and even one from poet David Morley. Not a large book, it shows what can be done when people interested in a city can collaborate to produce a work of art on an urban scale.
