Item description for Psyche (Jewel) by Louis Couperus, Lucius Apuleius, B. S. Berrington & Robert Graves...
Published in 1898, Couperus' symbolist mastepiece is an adult fairy tale. Psyche is a descendant of the original Psyche whom Cupid loved, but this love story is even less straightforward, even more tortured than the archetypal Greek myth from which it derives. The symbolism that it uses is that of the luxuriousness, hardness and beauty of precious stones.
Also includes Robert Graves' translation of Apuleius' original story
Louis Couperus was born in the Hague in 1863 and lived in the Dutch East Indies and Italy where he died of blood poisoning in 1923.
