Item description for The Baby Owner's Manual (Owner's and Instruction Manual) by M.D. Borgenicht Louis & Joe Borgenicht...

Overview
Offers a whimsical approach to baby care that likens the newest member of the family to a machine needing extra-special care, in a guide that features schematic diagrams for such "maintenance" techniques as getting a baby to sleep through the night and taking a baby to a doctor for "servicing." Original. 30,000 first printing.

Publishers Description
At Last! A Beginner’s Guide to Newborn Baby Technology

You’ve programmed your VCR, you’ve reinstalled Microsoft Windows, you can even check your e-mail on your Palm Pilot. But none of this experience will prepare you for the world’s biggest technological marvel: a newborn baby.

Through step-by-step instructions and helpful schematic diagrams, The Baby Owner’s Manual explores hundreds of frequently asked questions: What’s the best way to swaddle a baby? How can I make my newborn sleep through the night? When should I bring the baby to a doctor for servicing? Whatever your concerns, you’ll find the answers here—courtesy of celebrated pediatrician Dr. Louis Borgenicht and his son, Joe Borgenicht. Together, they provide plenty of useful advice for anyone who wants to learn the basics of childcare.
A board-certified pediatrician with the American Academy of Pediatrics, Dr. Louis Borgenicht has run his own practice in Salt Lake City for the last 16 years. He is also Assistant Professor of Pediatrics at The University of Utah School of Medicine, and he serves on the Board of Directors for Physicians for Social Responsibility. In 2002, Ladies’ Home Journal named him the Best Pediatrician in Utah. Dr. Borgenicht lives with his wife, Jody, who has finally learned how to sleep through the night while her husband goes out on calls. Joe Borgenicht is a first-time father who frequently telephones his dad for advice. He is also a writer, a television producer, and the co-author of The Action Hero’s Handbook. He lives in Salt Lake City with his wife, Melanie, and their son, Jonah (who still operates at peak efficiency after his first eighteen months). Paul Kepple and Jude Buffum are better known as the Philadelphia-based studio Headcase Design, whose work has been featured in many design publications, such as American Illustration, Communication Arts, and Print. Paul worked at Running Press Book Publishers for several years before opening Headcase in 1998. Both graduated from the Tyler School of Art, where they now teach. When Jude was an infant, his owners would often program him for extended periods of sleep mode. Paul’s owners, on the other hand, tried numerous times to return their model, believing his inability to grow hair was a manufacturer’s defect.

Reviews - What do customers think about The Baby Owner's Manual (Owner's and Instruction Manual)?

its ok, but too gimmicky.  Sep 19, 2008
The book is really informative, but the whole "baby as a product" gimmick, giving instructions about the baby as if it were a power mower or something, wears thin by the end of the first chapter. It's just too clever for its own good. I like the art and style, but if I had found a different book that didn't rely so heavily on a gimmick, I would have gotten that instead.

Hysterical and well informed  Aug 28, 2008
Between this handbook and the 'Be Prepared' handbook for Dads, my husband really enjoyed reading this book to my belly every evening. It was funny yet useful at the same time. We also loved the different charts and pictures used.

Perfect for technical dads  Jul 19, 2008
If you like new age, emotional, heart touching baby books that tell you about how you should raise your kid to solve all the worlds problems this isn't the book for you. If you need straight forward, to the point answers when your kid is barfing all over you at 1 am and sleep deprivation is making you function like a deer staring into headlights and don't know what to do, get this book. It's set up like an owners manual for your car, TV, etc.; a basic engineering manual and easy to follow. I got tired of the baby books telling me that if I didn't hold my kid in the proper position while soothing during teething it could lead to a lack of brain development. No guilt tripping or wild opinions here; just needed info when you need it and easy to find. Some reviews say it's boring, but it's not set up for you to read through. It's reference material you quickly look up when you need it. Just like any owners manual, who reads the thing when you get it? You look up what you need when you need it. I get this book for every guy I know who is going to have kids.

Great  Jun 27, 2008
A must for all guys. Reads like a car owner's manual - no typical flowery baby stuff.

The How-to manual for babies  Jun 11, 2008
We received this book as a gift. It is great! It combines sarcasm with useful advice for childcare. It reads a bit like an operation manual for an electronic product. I won't say it has all the information you ever needed for caring properly for your infant. What book does? However, this book is very thorough while keeping from being a bore to read. It also provides some very useful charts for feeding, sleep, bowel and bladder function.
