Item description for You Alone Are Real to Me: Remembering Rainer Maria Rilke (American Readers Series) by Lou Andreas-Salome...
Never before available in English, You Alone Are Real to Me documents the relationship between Salom and Rainer Maria Rilke that spanned almost 30 years. Salom gives an intimate account of Rilke's poetic development from the early romantic poems to the sculpted new poems and the final breakthrough of the Elegies. From their romantic beginnings to the later twists and turns of their separate lives, Rilke appealed to Salom during times of crisis in his writing as well as in the intimate matters of his life. Salom captures both the summit and the abyss of Rilke's creative struggle. The memoir offers a stunning portrait of Rilke, as we in the English-speaking world have never really seen him. Richly illustrated with photos, this book is an indispensable work on the author of The Duino Elegies, as well as a rich resource for the growing interest in Salom.
Lou Andreas-Salom was born in St. Petersburg, Russia, but lived most of her life in Germany as a famous novelist, memoirist (of Rilke, Nietzsche, and Ibsen), friend to Freud and critic. She was praised by Freud as the smartest woman he had ever met, and prized by Rilke as "one of the most wonderful people who have come my way . . . without the influence of this extraordinary woman my whole development would not have been able to take the paths that have led to many things." Salom wrote his memoir in 1927, a year after Rilke's death.

Reviews - What do customers think about You Alone Are Real to Me: Remembering Rainer Maria Rilke (American Readers Series)?
Homage to Rainer Rilke by the One He Trusted the Most Dec 21, 2005
I discovered Rainer Rilke several years ago - and after happening onto his "Diaries" I was always curious about Lou Andreas-Salome. Stumbling onto this book - her carefully crafted tribute to her friend, former lover and fellow "muse-er".
This volume fills many gaps in my Rilke knowledge and at the same time, the painstakingly gentle steps seem to bely the passion this couple has been known for in third party accounts of their relationship. That is my only disappointment - the reserved writing left me wondering... still... about the strength and longevity of their friendship.
While I am not a translation specialist by any means, Angela von der Lippe seems to have stepped into the heart of Andreas-Salome and I keep wondering when her translation of the Rilke:Andreas-Salome letters will be published so I can, perhaps, get some of that personal heart beat that this public display is missing.
