Item description for Watch, Fight and Pray: My Personal Strategy to Combat Prostate Cancer by Lonnell Johnson...
"This book is a testimony to the belief that prayer changes things. As a Urologic Oncologist whose research focus is prostate cancer, I have witnessed prostate cancer outcomes that cannot be explained by our current knowledge of this disease. The role that God plays in our lives should never be underestimated. His power works in ways that we do not understand in the scientific world. Nonetheless, His power is felt by many. Lonnell prays by quoting biblical verses and relating them to real life situations. This works for Lonnell. Other methods of prayer may work for others. The powerful message of this book is that prayer changes things." -Isaac J. Powell, M.D., Professor, Dept. of Urology Wayne State University/Karmanos Cancer Inst.., Detroit, Michigan "At a time when faith is gaining greater respect in the corridors of every dimension of our social fabric, Dr. Lonnell Johnson has penned yet another document proclaiming the victorious presence of God in the affairs of men. In this timely book, Dr. Johnson presents an intelligent, responsible and practical strategy to address the dreaded disease of prostate cancer. There are many avenues presented as preferred medical protocol for this disease, but faith in God is usually not part of the protocol. What makes Dr. Johnson's strategy unique, however, is the God-ordained strategy to blend the elements of faith, the skilful hand of the apothecary, and good nutritional stewardship to defeat this dreaded disease. I know that you will be encouraged and inspired by this beautiful story of triumphant faith." -Eric L. Warren, Senior Pastor Ambassadors for Christ Fellowship, Columbus, Ohio

Reviews - What do customers think about Watch, Fight and Pray: My Personal Strategy to Combat Prostate Cancer?
99% religion and only 50 words of 'cure', i rather have the 'cure' Feb 9, 2006
Lonnell is getting the word out that one can actually do something for themselves to prevent and shrink prostate cancer to near oblivion. ... His battle is largely religious based interpersed in his book with his nice crab poetry, for we all know the flesh (desire) is weak. To thwart prostate cancer, one must 'religiously' stick to a strict dietary supplements and diet change protocol ...... which is not at all detailed in this book, so dont look there for it. However, Dr Lonnell is yet new to such therapy and he will need much study to improve his future books to be of much much help for others seeking "alternative medicine" prostate cancer relief. In less then fifty words in all the 46 pages, did he cover his 'protocol' and results. I rather have my money back for this book after finding out he had not much to say about treating prostate cancer at all, but maybe these less than fifty words is of use to others as a start in their search, struggle for prostate cancer help. Yes, amazingly, after long time having a high PSA readings of 8 to 10, after only forty days of using a herbal formula PC Hope protocol (the off-spring of PC Spes) his PSA reading went down to 3.15. Still PSA of 3.15 is very much in the cancer danger territory, and he will need to persist many many more months and keep doing so till end of life to bring it down to below a PSA of 1 and keep it there. He did mention his prior pharmacist avotional knowledge helped him mix the PC Hope into an tomatoe juice suspension by adding olive oil and bentonite. He would have been better off just by swallowing the capsules whole or just emptying them into tomatoe juice alone in a jar with lid on tight and shake hard. For bentonite is an adsorber, and will interfer with the body's absorption of some herbal ingredients !!! I am also a pharmacist, and believe me, the average pharmacist and doctor is not at all helpful with alternative medicine; ignorance, bad advice persist. For example, Lonnell learn how soybean isoflavones surpresses prostate cancer, so he eats soy nuts. Not a good choice. Better take the soy extract of isoflavones directly alone. For the omega-6 fats in soy beans and some nuts and some cooking oils and red meats promotes the growth of prostate cancer !
The safer cooking oils will be extra virgin olive oil (if fresh, not rancid) and coconut oil, and any oil extremely low in omega-6 and omega-3 fats. All in moderation (lower oil consumption).
Lonnell mentions Nutrition 2000 Prostate Protocol only once with no mentioning of what it involves. But, that protocol is covered on their Nutrition 2000 website. Again, I review even that protocol and find some minor mis-information and some major alternative medicine advice completely missing.
I will now mention just a few missing but very important considerations which both authors have completely missed:
First, change to a low fat diet of around only 10% of calories for fats and oils. That means for a 2000 calorie diet no more than 22 grams of fats/oils daily (think of juicing vegetables and eating dark red beans and lentils with brown rice)(I prefer the Green Star juicer) ... but at same time limit intake of sugars and cooked simple starches (keep the blood sugars to low normal). Yes, the cooking of the starches as in apple pie and potatoes and wheat flour causes them to be more glycemic (raises blood sugar levels). But, by eating then with other foods, their glycemic effects will be lessen somewhat (though not enough without adding certain fibers for those seeking extra life-extension effects of low calorie dieting) This low fat diet is best to limit the amounts of the omega-6 fats, so you will need to research on this (avoid soybean oil, peanut butter and grain fed red meats, etc which are high in omega-6) Also, excess omega-3 fats (flaxseed oil and range fed red meats for example) is not helpful. However, extra omega-3 fish oils is helpfull and not an hinderance to this protocol. However, for those on life-extending low calorie dieting, even the 2000 calories a day is too much; therefore for those, no more than around 18 grams (just under 4 tsp/day) of fats/oils per day to be close to that 10% fat calories.
Secondly, review the literature on "hormonal balance" (such as Dr John Lee, MD's writings). This is where topically applied progesterol cream/oil has been shown to suppress prostate cancer with great results ! (has been shown to lower PSA readings practically by itself).
Thirdly, get a good nights sleep and avoid stressing-out. Normal melatonin secretion surpresses prostate cancer alittle. And the avoidance of chronic stressful adrenal gland release of adrenaline (norepinephrine) will be much helpfull. For norephineprine can alter the hormonal receptor sites (such as for progestone) and therefore increase the spreading of the cancer. Unfortunately for some people, caffeine must also be avoided, because caffeine can affect their adrenal gland hormonal balance and also increase its release of norepinephrine. Some rat study has shown that the use of propranolol (prescription norepinephrine blocker) can surpress prostate cancer spreading; but, the dose for humans is not known. So, our alternatives could be relaxation excercises (maybe meditation), phosphatidylserine, lithium orotate (5-10mg lithium/day), L-theanine, Kava kava, lipoic acid (with acetyl-l-carnitine), magnesium, and etc.
No space here left for lycopene, genistein, selenium, vitDE, erectile dysfn, etc, EGCG, beta 1,3D glucan, lorazepam, avoid peanut butter (too much omega-6), ..
The PC Hope, EGCG, genistein, low intake of omega-6 will unfortunately contribute to erectile dysfunction. Exercise and actively life will also surpress prostate cancer and help overcome erectile dysfunction to some extent (Pelvic floor exercises for erectile dysfunct)
Some 'experts' think that prostate cancer lives on sugar. NOT completely true ! Prostate cancer can easily survive on low sugar diet, for they are not so dependent on glycolysis as energy source. But, still excess simple sugar is not good.
Avoid extra drinks/supplements of these amino acids which will increase the spread of cancer: tyrosine and phenylalanine. Lysine amino acid may lessen the spread of cancers (see Matthias Rath, M.D.).
Beware bad advice exist everywhere, but let me know if u think of anything important to mention, by your follow up review of this book.
