Item description for Liberating the Bible: A Guide for the Curious and Perplexed by Linda M. Maccammon...
Overview Why the Bible is a spiritual and moral source relevant and useful for all people of faith and good will rather than a rule book of "do's" and "don't's." MacCammon maintains that the Bible is best read not as a rule book but as a text with stories that reveal truth claims and provide examples of how we should live. Liberating the Bible clarifies the nature and purpose of the Bible, examines principal stories from both testaments, and emphasizes how the two testaments reveal God's plan for salvation for all people and serve as a model for leading a moral and spiritual life. The chapters include explanatory side bars, study questions, and suggested readings. Accessible to a broad audience without resorting to scholarly jargon, Liberating the Bible is appropriate for undergraduates as well as adult study groups.

Even good for those who are not perplexed! Jun 7, 2008
Dr. MacCammon has presented her readers with a wonderful study of the Bible and its role in the lives of believers of all faiths. She looks at the messages and methods God has presented to the community in a myriad of ways, always educating people but often with mixed results. MacCammon explains biblical criticism, the stories of the Hebrew and Christian Bibles, the role of early schisms in the Jewish/Christian communities, and the ways Jesus as Jesus or as Christ can have meaning for both Jewish and Christian believers. MacCammon focuses on God's gifts to humanity and, while a Christian professor, shows that no one community holds the complete and real truth of God's caring for the people of the world.
Tremendous Read Jun 7, 2008
I really enjoyed reading this book. Dr. McCammon combines thorough research, skilled exegesis, and just the right amount of humor to provide a refreshing and important look at the Bible. It is a very smooth read but also consistently challenged me to think about my own assumptions and spirituality. I strongly recommend the book to all readers.
