Fun and Practical Tips For Scrapbookers Sep 2, 2008
To start off, I love the subtitle of this book: "I take shortcuts. I make the most of my supplies. I find significance in the everyday. I scrapbook my ordinary life." The first two especially are something that almost every scrapbooker can relate to.
The design aesthetic of the layouts in this book, created by Cooper and a team of six contributors, is clean & simple.
The book is divided into four sections: Why, What, How & Real. To me, the first two sections (Why and What) are great eye candy but not incredibly (scrap) life-changing. But the How and Real sections are a whole different story. That's where the real meat of Real.Life.Scrapbooking. is found.
Those two sections include some real constructive and solidly useful information. The "to-do" binder project on page 76 is the best idea I think I've seen for me to arrange my photos that I've had printed and am waiting to scrap. There are also time-saving photo and design tips and my favorite tips - how to extend kits to get the most out of them. This is taught through several actual examples of kits shown with examples of projects created from them. Then most of the final section is devoted to using schemes to save time, another of my favorite techniques. There are two full pages of schemes as well as a many examples of how to use them.
Real.Life.Scrapbooking. is a great help for scrapbookers with a clean and simple style who want some tips and tricks for saving time and supplies.
My absolute favourite Dec 31, 2007
I love this book! I think its because I love her style...the colours, the clean layouts, the photography and the journalling are all so inspirational!! Great resource book for ideas.
Good but not great Dec 29, 2007
I had been looking forward to reading this book. (finally got it as a christmas gift). Plus: the quality of the book: great paper, very nicely put together, nice size. I do like the simple style of her scrapbooking, mainly paper and photos with very few embellishment. Very similar to all the layouts you'll see in simple scrapbook magazine. Very good photos on the scrapbook pages. Very good journaling on the scrapbook pages. It was more entertaining to read the journaling than the actual text of the book. If you really have no idea what to scrapbook about, you can get some nice ideas but I think most of us know what we want to scrapbook about just want to get more ideas on how to do it.
Minus: * It is repetitive. After all, it is her style being featured and all of the Layouts are very very similar * What bothered me the most, is that I didn't really learn a lot. The entire text on the first chapter (out of only 4 chapters) was the author, describing what she scrapbooked about on that page (which you can tell by looking at the page and reading the journaling) * The only real tool is in the last chapter, with the use of sketches, but that is nothing new either.
Overall a good book but not a great one.
Good read, not a must have. Dec 6, 2007
While I really did enjoy reading this book and looking at the layouts it wasn't really anything new. If you have books or magazines from the Simple Scrapbook team then this book will just reinforce the idea of the simple layouts of everyday life and little moments. There were some nice ideas for layouts and journaling that I would use. I think that this book has lots of good ideas for someone with small children. I recommend it, but wait for a good sale or put it on your wish list.
AWESOME BOOK! Nov 17, 2007
This is by far one of the BEST books I've ever read on scrapbooking. As a full-time Mom of 2 little boys, I'm always looking for ways to make my pages better, faster, and more meaningful. This book has helped me realize how to do it all in between the diaper changes, laundry, messes, and play time with my boys! Everyone that has a hard time finding time to scrapbook will love this book!
