Reviews - What do customers think about Hospitality: The Heart of Spiritual Direction (Spiritual Directors International)?
Wonderful new guide for spiritual directors Oct 26, 2007
Although I am not a spiritual director (in Dr. Leslie Hay's target audience), I enjoyed reading this book. Dr. Hay shares extensive research and her own personal experience in examining the concept of hospitality and how it relates to spiritual direction. Hospitality is not just graciously welcoming people into our homes but it is opening the door of our hearts to everyone we encounter. She reinforces this idea with stories from the Bible, specifically the Walk to Emmaus. To help spiritual directors in their practice, she proposes useful introspective questions for them to ask themselves such as "Am I truly accepting", and "Do I create an environment that is warm and free of anxiety". Finally, she offers 5 pathways to becoming hospitality which are guiding principles of her spiritual direction ministry. I was particularly moved by the discussion of "Developing the Gift of Forgiveness". "People do hurt us, and we them, and it is usually out of ignorance or stupidity. Thus forgiveness is the loving response regardless of what has transpired. While all of us would at times like to change the past, we all know that we cannot do this, and forgiveness gives us a way of moving from the pain of the past into the peace of the present".
Dr. Leslie. Hay's wisdom, experience and compassion come through beautifully in this book. I hope all spiritual directors will open their hearts to Dr. Hay and her new book.
