Reviews - What do customers think about 11: Indispensable Relationships You Can't Be Without?

If you're a linear thinker, don't waste your time reading this book.  Jan 26, 2009
This book argues that Christians need a particular set of relationships as represented by certain Biblical characters: Jonathan, Timothy, Jethro, etc. His arguments for believers needing this particular set of relationships were not convincing to me.

There is enough material here to fill perhaps 10 pages, not an entire book. Where was his editor?

Be warned, this book gives no evidence that Sweet is an organized thinker; he rambles from thought to thought in no particular order. If you want an author to lay out well-reasoned arguments to support his assertions, then Sweet is not your man.

Sweet, Sipped and Savored  Jan 2, 2009
Leonard Sweet's 11: Indispensable Relationships You Can't Be Without is best sipped and savored with friends and loved ones. You will be filled with ideas and challenged by new concepts of the importance of relationships. Leonard Sweet uses Biblical characters to highlight the importance of people who influence our lives and the roles we assist others. He asks us, Who is your Jonathan (your true friend), your Barnabas (your encourager), your Peter/Paul (your yoda), your Deborah (your back coverer), and your Rhoda (your little one who sees life as new)?

Most readers will be intrigued, enlightened and enlivened by the variety of sources Sweet uses. He uses quotes from current life such as Ocean's Eleven to prove the point that you need others to accomplish your mission. Interspersed with bible verses, Sweet weaves the thoughts of T.S. Elliott, Carl Sagan, William Blake, Cicero, Aristotle, John Calvin, Jean-Paul Sartre, Mark Twain and Saint Theresa to name a few. Some readers may consider a thought or idea as disquieting but they will find gold ingots in each chapter and especially at the end of the book where Sweet reveals our relationship with the Paraclete (Holy Spirit).

Don't miss out on the excellent questions at the end of each chapter which provide great small group/friend discussion or individual reflection.

Hang onto the book and review it at various points of your life to consider if you are both a recipient and a giver of these 11 indispensable relationships you can't be without.

11 is an 11 out of 12  Nov 14, 2008
I recommend Leonard Sweet's book - 11.
Very practical and using Biblical examples urges us to have these 11 relationships in our lives.
Would be good for a group Bible study as he includes questions at the end of each chapter.
Unlike some of his books which are a bit overwhelming and technical sometimes, I would give this an 11 out of 12 (12 being the highest) :)

Behaviors to live by  Sep 1, 2008
11 indispensable relationships you can't be without, are values and ethics everyone should have and live by. We often fall short when faced with a situation that require exercising the appropriate behavior. This book urge the reader to live with your relationships.

We're Not In This Alone  Jul 28, 2008
I like Sweet's reference to the movies Oceans 11 & 12 in that it points out how we're not completely equipped to meet our own needs. Certainly God is our provider, but He chooses to work through our systems and cultures. Sweet points out that we can't be lone rangers in this life and experience the deeper things, like relationships and our own life purpose. As iron sharpens iron, we need the Jethroes, Lydias, Peters, and other relationships to help us become who God created us to be. Thank God we're not all vanilla!
