Reviews - What do customers think about Henri Nouwen Illuminated?
Gateway to Prayer Nov 1, 2005
Sroka has combined his talent as a graphic designer and his devotion to the works of Henri Nouwen to create a modern version of the illuminated manuscripts popular in the Renaissance. His media--computer generated photos and type--are a far cry from the hand-drawn and printed images of earlier times, but the effect is similar. Each of Sroka's fifty-plus color photos serves as a mat for a short quotation from Nouwen's work. The book is divided into three sections develop your spiritual perspective, nurture your spiritual nature, and share your spiritual life. Within those are three or four chapters that open with a short reflection in keeping with Nouwen's vision. In the chapter "Go Deeper" Sroka focuses on Nouwen's observation that "the spirit of God moves very gently, very persistently, but also very deeply." The first reflection, with a quotation from "Making All Things New" contains a photo of a nighttime cityscape and the words "The spiritual life/does not remove us from the world/but leads us deeper into it."
Though this sample is meant to express the power of Sroka's book, it is clearly inadequate. You need the book itself. Get a copy, and give one as a gift to someone you love. It will be an endless source of inspiration and ever-inviting gateway to prayer.
