Reviews - What do customers think about Cain Volume 1 (Yaoi)?

Blurred  Jan 13, 2008
The most glaring deficiency in this book has more to do with the publication than anything. Yaoi Press is a small publisher, and this is a translated book. I understand that. But that does NOT excuse the extremely poor quality of the images themselves. The pages seem to have copied exceedingly badly, with everything blurry and indistinct. There are even a few pages that aren't like this at all, and the text isn't blurry! Arrgh! I can't believe this went to print this way!

That being said, I DO intend on buying the other volume... if only because I want to know where it goes, and the artist was excellent in Winter Demon 2. This is obviously a much older work, however, and the quality is not as high.

advise you all  Dec 13, 2007
I bought this comic book lookin its amazing cover. I didn't pretend a lot about the story but I was really surprised about it.
The story is very interlaced and precise and the historical reconstruction is particurally interesting.
The characters' costruction is really amazing and the chemistry between them is magic. What about the draws I thinks they're wonderful and evocative. The think wondered me is the fantastic cover for the volume one and two. The colors are splendid. In summary a master piece that I advise to all yaoi's lovers.

Intense and Subdued!  Dec 8, 2007
Ok, after reading Winter Demon 2 I totally had to get this book since it was by the same artists. This art is definately the same style as WD2, but you can tell that it's much older. It's amazing if you compare this with WD2. Their art now is much more emotive and detailed, but the Cain art is really free and stylish. It's not often you get to see how artists change over the years. I also want to say that the artists have a great style that is 100% manga style, but beholden to NO ONE. I have no idea who their influences are. They're totally in their own category, totally original and really good.

Cain is not an easy read. The writers are actually expecting you to think with this one. I might have not appreciated it except a teacher of mine read it and when I got the opinion of the book from someone who never read manga before I was able to read it again and actually 'GET IT.' Cain doesn't have much text. The story is in the art. The art is telling the story. If you're used to reading manga like crazy, like me, you get into the habit of not paying much attention to panels that don't have text in it. You're automatically skimming, skimming, and you don't stop skimming until you see words. Don't do that with this book! OMG, when I actually paid attention to what was going on between the words I got to see how well-crafted this story is. It's like a really good play. I want to say Shakespear, but I've never read Shakespear...however my teacher who read it did mention that.

The story is about a mysterious warrior who was looking for a certain boy for reasons we don't know yet, and finds him. There's kind of a shota feel going on with the warrior and the boy. There's also some intrigue going on with the church. I'm not going to spell it all out here. I think that this is definately a series to get into. The first volume was setting up a lot, and I know there's going to be one of those stories with lots of 'OMG!' kinds of twists coming up. I noticed again that it has a picture on the edge that looks like it will make a big picture when you put the other books side by side. Like a spine picture.

Give this series a chance. Read it slow. Don't ignore the panels without text in it. Like I said, this isn't a fluff read. You have to use your brain a little, and it's worth doing that.

I'm going to link to their other book, oh and also they did the second story in Winter Demon 1 (I'm pretty sure) and they look like the artists for the next one too.

Promising  Nov 10, 2007
I appreciate this graphic novel for several reasons.
First of all the drawings reveal a particular style which is far from being a mere copy of Japanese manga, it shows a really original touch instead.
The details are accurate, the backgrounds well done. It seems the authors have been very careful about describing the historical and cultural setting.
The characters are interesting, especially Cain, who is really engaging.
Moreover the ancient, obscure impression given by the atmosphere that pervades the whole story is fascinating. Reading the story carefully, I noticed that some questions which concern the relationship between the two main characters have been left open. For example, why Cain, a so important warrior is interested in an insignificant young thief?
The plot is well built, and surely not so simple as it may appear. In fact the story begins with an execution where the two main characters are clearly involved: I wonder whether it is an anticipation of the end or it conceals something more? I can't wait to read the second volume to find out what is going to happen!

Disappointing...  Oct 29, 2007
I have yet to find a western yaoi manga that measures up to the quality of Japanese yaoi manga, but some of them are still very enjoyable. Stallion and Winter Demon are good examples. Unfortunately, this one is only okay, and $12.95 is way too much money for just "okay."

The artist/author was featured in the recent artbook release, Yaoi Gothic, and it was hot and sexy (even in black and white). The cover art for Cain is also very well done. However, the interior art isn't as nice. The proportions are good, and the backgrounds and shadings are nicely done, but the drawings all have thick lined edges and the noses on the characters just look wrong at times.

The cover and the story of a brilliant warrior in love with a thief are what attracted me to the book. But, unlike the cover, our warrior looks like a teenager and his thief looks about twelve. The thief looks so young it borders on shota. This is almost irrelevant in volume one since there is no true yaoi content. The two characters kiss exactly twice. I am not sure why this has a mature rating. Perhaps the next two volumes of the trilogy will have more yaoi content. Even the story didn't redeem the book. It took about ten minutes for me to read - twice. "Warrior is commended by his fuedal lord; thief is caught stealing bread; warrior takes thief home and trains him; warrior's squire is jealous; warrior professes his love; the end." I have already cancelled my pre-order for volume 2. Those looking for a good medieval yaoi story will be very disappointed. I'd recommend Cantarella instead - the yaoi content is about the same, but the story and art are far superior.
