Lawrence J. Crabb, Jr. (better known as Dr. Larry Crabb) is a psychologist, author, Bible teacher and seminar speaker. Dr. Crabb has written many best-selling books and is the founder and director of New Way Ministries. He serves as a Spiritual Director for the American Association of Christian Counselors and since 1996 has been the Distinguished Scholar-in-Residence of Colorado Christian University.
Crabb was born in Evanston, Illinois, in 1944 and was a reluctant student of psychology until he began studying abnormal psychology and personality theory. During graduate school he experienced a period of deep scepticism before being guided back to the faith by Francis Schaeffer and CS Lewis. His renewed spiritual passion convinced him that Christianity had a more fundamental role to play in clinical psychology.
Crabb's first books were Basic Principles of Biblical Counseling (Zondervan, 1975) and Effective Biblical Counseling (Zondervan, 1977). He has since gone on to write over 40 further books; some of his more well-known ones include Inside Out, Finding God, Connecting and Men & Women: Enjoying the Difference.
He founded the Institute of Biblical Counseling in the early-1980s while on the faculty of Grace Theological Seminary (1982–1989). The institute has since been replaced with the School of Behavioral Sciences. The school was birthed out of his book Shattered Dreams (WaterBrook, 2001) describing Naomi's journey from the Book of Ruth. New Way Ministries (the "new way" from Romans 7:6), established in 2001, runs the schools/conferences.
Crabb was Adjunct Professor of Applied Theology at Regent College from 1998–1999, Chairman and Professor, Master of Arts in Biblical Counseling Program, Colorado Christian University, 1989–1996, Chairman and Professor, Graduate Department of Biblical Counseling, Grace Theological Seminary, 1982–1989 and in private practice for Clinical Psychology in Boca Raton, Florida, 1973-1982. He was also the lone psychologist at the Psychological Counseling Center, Florida Atlantic University - Assistant Professor, Psychology Department 1971-1973 and Assistant Professor, Psychology, University of Illinois Staff Psychologist, Student Counseling Center, University of Illinois, 1970-1971. He received Teacher of the Year Award in the Psychology Department in 1971.
Dr. Crabb and his wife of forty-six years, Rachael, live in the Denver, Colorado area. For additional information please visit www.newwayministries.org

Reviews - What do customers think about The Pressure's Off Workbook?
Christian Must Read Nov 11, 2008
Outstanding! This book is a must-read for any Christian seriously trying to follow God in his/her everyday life. Crabb dispells the myths that have been fed to seeking believers for generations by churches that have rationalized and institutionalized the gospel of life. Many writings in Christian literature promise to take the follower of Christ to a higher level of fellowship but fail to deliver on that promise. "The Pressure'a Off" delivers!
Not a new way, just God's old way Aug 25, 2008
Too much psychologizing or mystifying of the great and mysterious yet rational and explainable relationship between man and God. Its not a NEW way, its God's old way.
On p. 42, Crabb says we need "one-on-one or small-group conversations where our lives are laid open in the presence of a person gifted to discern the workings of our inner life". Hunh? We need less talking to human beings and more talking to the one High Priest, Jesus Christ Himself. We need no human confessor. I totally disagree with that statement.
Finally, in chapter 6 he gets into Scripture, and it becomes clear, as I had suspected, that what he is calling the Old Way vs. the New Way is really living under grace instead of the Law. Nothing new about that. Not that its easy, mind you, and he makes good points in this chapter, but why act like its some new mysterious thing?
His language and writing style really make me distrust this book, even though I did end up agreeing with him except where noted above. He is correct that most Christians prefer the blessings of God rather than the presence of God, and that our real prayer should be to know Him better, not get better blessings. This is a crucial and non-trivial distinction, so Crabb's words need to be said.
Just wish he didn't sell it in such an off-putting way.
Great workbook for a great book! May 24, 2008
I've read many of Larry Crabb's books, and they are even better when he writes a workbook to go along with it!
Mind and Life changing, worth the read Dec 7, 2007
"The Pressure's Off," by Larry Crabb is the most significant book I've read related to my spiritual life and emotional healing in the past 20 years. I recommend this book for finally getting a correct perspective on God's plan and presence in our personal lives. This one book substitutes for a combination of numerous counseling or discipleship books. In addition, unlike the other books, Crabb's book will lead a person away from a self-analysis focus that goes deeper into the self toward an understanding of God's work and presence in and around us.
changed my life Nov 1, 2007
This is without question the most powerful book I have ever read. I think I have read it at least a dozen times, and underlined in at least 5 different color highlighters and 4 or more ink colors. It exposes the self serving motives behind all my attempts at spirituality and unveils the greatest satisfaction that is available to me as a believer, the joy that I have overlooked in all my attempts to make life work. I will never be the same again...all my energy wasted on shallow pursuits that dissolve in the face of the greater hope.
