The Wive's Tales Jul 30, 2008
Sophie Brent finds herself at the company Christmas party. She doesn't know why she bothered to attend because the one man that she wants above all others probably won't even notice she is there. Sophie placates herself with punch and prepares to make a run for it. Sophia suddenly finds herself face to face with the one man that makes her heart pound and her palms sweat; Matthew Westland, her boss and the object of all her fantasies. Sophie contents herself with exchanging pleasantries and heads to the parking garage. Just before she leaves the building, she hears the elevator doors open and someone calls her name. Turning around she finds that it is none other than Matthew Westland and Sophie throws caution to the wind and heads back towards him and the mistletoe hanging above their heads.
Sophie doesn't realize that this is the last time she will ever see Matthew as a free, independent woman. A new government is days away from taking over and her life is about to change. The next time she sees Matthew will be at a wife auction where she is the main attraction in a bidding war.
Matthew Westland has been unable to get Sophie Brent out of his mind since his company's Christmas party. He regrets having had to let Sophie go, not only in his personal life but in his professional as well. Sophie was one of Matt's best and brightest employees, but the new government will no longer allow women in the workforce. Matt counts his blessings and his money when a government sponsored wife auction is held in his company headquarters and Sophie is one of the main attractions. Against his father's wishes, Matt decides that he will have a wife of his choosing and it will be Sophie Brent. What he doesn't bargain for, nor does he realize just how far his father will go to in order to get rid of Sophie and make Matt marry a woman of his father's choosing.
Ever since reading The Miner's Wife, I have been waiting for the release of The Executive's Wife by Lara Santiago. It was all I wanted it to be and more. Full of highly erotic and emotionally hot sex, I fell in love with Matthew almost immediately. Talk about a true hero in helping a damsel in distress; I love how Matt took care to keep Sophie safe but allowed her wings to fly, even if just in the privacy of their home. I thought Sophie intelligent and unafraid and I found myself more than once cheering her decisions.
The Executive's Wife ties in and relates to The Miner's Wife beautifully. I love how Lara Santiago has written this series and I can't wait for the third installment.
Brutal Blackthorn needs a wife, and he needs one today. Genetically bred, he gets his energy from sexual release and it has been months since his last woman. Brutal goes into town to the wife auction, but when the auction nears the end, Brutal and one other man are left without a wife because one of the women died in transport. Deciding to fight for the last remaining female, Brutal looks at her on the auction block and asks for her name. When he looks in her eyes, he knows he is lost and that he has to be the one to win.
Hannah Brent just knows that there has been some mistake. Sold by her ex-husband to pay gambling debts, she is transported to a moon surrounding Mars to be a wife to a miner. When Brutal politely asks her name, she is spellbound and tells him that if he wins, she will not give him any trouble. Hannah doesn't realize that in making this bargain, she will never want to leave his arms. Alas, trouble follows and only by sheer will does Hannah over come it.
I fell in love with Brutal Blackthorn in The Miner's Wife. He was a big ole sweet man who tried to be tough, but once he fell in love with Hannah, she was his whole world and I liked that. It made me all warm and fuzzy inside that a hero as tough as Brutal would become putty in Hannah's hands. As for Hannah, for having gone through what she did, she was an extremely strong, intelligent woman. She was in control of Brutal without him even knowing it, and I loved that!
The Miner's Wife is the first book I have read written by Lara Santiago and it will not be the last. The storyline kept me spellbound and the romantic interludes of the characters were extremely erotic. In fact, I couldn't put this book down until I read the last word. Lucky for me, there are two more books in Ms. Santiago's Wives Tales Series, The Executive's Wife and The Lawman's Wife, that I look forward to reading! If you are a fan of futuristic books, or even if you aren't, The Miner's Wife is just a good, all-around read that is totally satisfying!

Three Wives are Better Than One Jun 28, 2008
I zipped through these three novellas and enjoyed each one. Lots of drama, lots of sex, lots of smiles. This author has a brilliant imagination about the future, which is both dark and deliciously sexy. My favorite was the Exec's Wife, but I really liked them all. Very steamy!
Only one of the three stories was good, but not good enough to recommend buying the book Jan 3, 2008
The stories take place around the year 2076 after the Tiberius Group overtakes and rules the U.S. They create laws against women. Women are not allowed to hold jobs, own any finances or investments, go to school, walk outside without their husband or a blood male relative, etc. They are put up for auction to the highest bidder for men to buy them as wives. Those not sold as wives must live in institutions performing menial labor. A lot of the stories revolve around these issues and the stresses and unhappiness of women because of this. That makes the book somewhat depressing. I compare it to Jaid Black's books about the underground Viking society that occasionally kidnaps women from above and auctions them off as wives. Her stories are more fun and escapist. The women are horrified at first, but end up loving their husbands and living a happy life. The Wives Tales are not nearly as fun. There are too many victims. Although I did enjoy the third story more than the first two, I probably wouldn't recommend buying the book. The reason this qualifies as paranormal is that the three men in the three stories are genetically enhanced in slightly different ways. The genetic enhancements are a minor part of the stories. Setting: around 2076 earth and a moon of Mars. Genre: paranormal romance. The three stories follow.
2 stars to The Miner's Wife. Hannah is sent to a moon of Mars mining colony and is sold to Brutal, a miner for a temporary one year marriage. The author used one of my pet peeves: creating conflict through vague communication and inaccurate assumptions. They quickly fall in love with each other, but they think the other does not want him/her. He even goes so far as to free her to return to earth without him. Normal open communication would have solved the problem. Sexual language: erotic. Number of sex scenes: nine.
1 star to The Executive's Wife. Sophie is an employee of the company owned by Matt. They are attracted to each other from afar but do not act on it. When the wife auction is required for women, Matt buys her as his wife. His father is a senator and tries to have the marriage annuled. He wants Matt to marry Andrea, the daughter of the governor and then to eventually run for Pres of the U.S. Matt loves Sophie and dislikes Andrea and doesn't want to be in politics.
CAUTION SPOILERS: The senator and governor lie, scheme, blackmail and create false video tape evidence to take to the court to force Matt to marry Andrea. Instead of interesting conflict, this was depressing, as if he were being framed for something. Added to the Tiberius environment against women, and this story was doubly depressing and no fun. I also found a lack of character development for Matt and Sophie. The author described them as liking sex with each other, but not much else. Sexual language: erotic. Number of sex scenes: ten.
3 stars to The Lawman's Wife. The characters Grace and Jon were more interesting in this story than the characters in the first two stories. She had been raped years earlier and has since had fears of dark enclosed places and being restrained by handcuffs. She meets Jon when she is forced to ride in an elevator which gets stuck, and she clutches him in fear. He later buys her at an auction to save her from going to an institution, but doesn't plan to marry her himself. He ends up falling in love with her.
CAUTION SPOILERS: The rapist, who is also a serial murderer, is then let free from jail by a Tiberius magistrate who is stupid, illogical and narrow-minded. The rapist claims he wants custody of the illegitimate child because he wants to sell the girl to a special school. The judge grants custody to him, without any regard for the mother and Jon who had started adoption proceedings. This was a little too much victimization for me. Not only were the laws bad, but an individual magistrate was bad. Although this was the best of the three stories, it wasn't good enough to recommend buying the book. Sexual language: erotic. Number of sex scenes: four.
Hot, hot, hot! Jul 25, 2007
I love this series! The heroes are smokin' and the pages turn fast. And I love that this book has three stories in it. Great reading for by the pool or beachside, because you'll need a dip in the water to cool off after these sexy stories.
Treat yourself to this great read!
Hmmmm!! Jul 20, 2007
Not sure about this one!! I kinda enjoyed it but I lost interest. I can really only comment on the first story "The Miner's Wife" because I put the book down after that and haven't picked it up again as yet. Oh I will, but I'll leave it for when I have nothing else to read. It's good, just not great. And as I HAVEN'T read the other two stories THEY may be even better!!?? I won't say DON'T buy it, but in hindsight, after reading the first story...I wouldn't have bought it if I knew what it WOULD be like. Get me drift?? Ciao Babies!!
